A volcano erupted on the Papua New Guinea island of Manam, spewing lava, rocks and ash onto villages, leaving one man missing and several others injured, officials said Tuesday.
Hundreds of Manam islanders were evacuated to the mainland after the volcano erupted early Friday.
At least one man is feared dead in the destruction.
"We believe he was buried by a lava flow," said Eric Ani, the director of the National Disaster Center, in a telephone interview Tuesday, adding that several other villagers had been injured by falling rocks.
"It rocked the whole island and sent rocks over the whole island as well. Rocks, some as big as footballs, falling onto houses and catching them on fire. It was quite devastating," Cabinet Minister Peter Barter told Radio New Zealand International on Monday.
Ani said the volcano had left a think blanket of ash covering the entire island, contaminating the water supply and making the island uninhabitable for its residents, who have been evacuated to Papua New Guinea's mainland.

"Further information has been received about the large eruption of Manam volcano in Papua New Guinea.
Thirteen people have been injured and one is missing, presumed dead after Friday's eruption.
The eruption was larger then the eruptions of last October and November.
Falling debris and lava burnt several people who were taken to Madang hospital for treatment. An elderly man from Warisi village was missing, possibly buried under his collapsed house. Two thousand people had returned to the island, which was evacuated last November, and are now pleading to be evacuated.
Several houses have burnt down from hot emissions from the volcano, and others have collapsed under the weight of ash and cinders. People are resorting to shielding themselves using palm leaves..."(End excerpt. Link follows.) Volcano News from Australian Volcanologist John Seach
Manam Volcano in Papua New Guinea - thank you Esther Ruth!
Eh, I heard about this on the Smithsonian listerv two days ago.
A demonstration of how you can have really large eruptions that go unnoticed in the mainstream media, and this happens all the time.
The problem comes when people begin to go really out of their way to find these, and then when they do, they function under the mistaken impression that there's been a sudden recent increase in them.
EEK. What a way to go....

Strategerist, this is not the first time you "already knew" something yet failed to post anything "two days ago." Why didn't you post the story "two days ago" so that others could read the story?
Getting the story first and then waiting to pounce on others is rather inconsiderate, don't you think?
If it bothers you to read other Freepers' items of interest, why do you? It seems that you frequently go to substantial effort posting your disinterest in a topic.
This time you claim that you knew about it already and then you deliberately waited for someone else to post a story just so that you could post that you "already knew" all about it and now consider the story as inconsequential.
Certainly you have better things to do with your time.
I actually was legitimately curious to see how long it would take someone to notice.
So you do like to draw attention to yourself. No one said that anything is wrong with that, Strategerist. :)
Maybe you could occasionally post your own threads and leave others to their threads of interest and enjoyment.
At least there will be no burial expense.
It's Bush's fault. Well, his and Halliburton's!
Damned global warmers! /sarcasm off/
Some people have a gift to forecast their intellectual and moral superiority well in advance of everyone else's ability to perceive the self-evident truth that these same "special" people are weenies.
On the subject of the volcano, bad times for everyone in Oceana with the earthquakes, tsunamis, oil mud pits boiling over, and now a volcano. Makes me realize why these islands were considered exiled punishment for those on the Asian continent in ancient times.
I have some friends working as missionaries in Papua New Guinea. They love it there, the people, the culture, doing God's work, the whole nine yards. Please pray for Steve and Celine and their family, that they are all right and that they are unaffected by this volcano.
Thank you!
I have a dear friend who was in Penang, Malaysia when the tsunamis hit December 26. Thank God none of the missionary teams there were harmed. They've done such great work there and across the Strait in Sumatra.
Hence the Joke: Ya know what burns my a$$? A lava flow about this high.
Well perhaps the guy will have the honors of being dug up in 10,000+ years as a representative of this age...
