Terri - Starving for Simple Legislation
http://www.citizenphil.com/2005/02/terri_starving_.html
I thought this was interesting.
Agreed. I had the same thought myself today.
I heard on a radio show that they are starving/dehydrating the elderly in many nursing homes throughout the country.
Perhaps Terri's story will help all of us some day.
True, though I have no idea what the alcohol content would have been. From what I understand, grape juice was made into wine not just to be an intoxicant, but also to protect it from spoiling.
At one time the Florida legisalture, did NOT consider a feeding tube EXTRAORDINARY MEANS. The defintion was changed and now they do. Thus, if they institute the gentleman's idea, feeding tubes AGAIN would no longer be considered extraordinary means.
What the ABOVE MEANS, if anything, in terms of the possible selling and implementation of Phil's idea, is NOT clear to me. Perhaps it suggest a difficult sell? Or after all the HOOPLA, maybe its an idea the legislature would gladly embrace as a way out of a tough dilemma.
Goodnight prayer for Terri!
I know a few people who have removed feeding tubes from elderly parents. They thought nothing of it, and even believed it was a good thing. It's rather difficult trying to then explain to that person that he/she killed their parent(s), though I did make an attempt. But WHO's going to want to face that reality after they've done it?
If I remember correctly, before the definition was changed, the SCOFla ruled that a patient must be allowed to decline gastrostomic food and water; the legislature changed the law to allow that, but opened up things much more than I expect most legislators realized.
Rolling back the change completely would revert to a set of laws the SCOFla declared unconstitutional. On the other hand, adding significant extra restrictions to the removal of food and water should not be a problem.
I suspect the pathology here is similar to that of abortion, and goes along with (what I call) Liberal Credo #1: The more people do a wrong thing, the less wrong it becomes.
People need to realize that one cannot receive attonement through others' sins. The only way to receive attonement is to repent and do what one can to make up for one's sins. Christ didn't just die to save people who commit minor sins. Crhist can save even those who have committed murder, if they truly and humbly repent for what they've done and seek his forgiveness.
Felos was probably pouting after today's hearing, especially with the surprise court visit from the DCF attorney. Bobby Schindler and David Gibbs were excellent. Glad to see that Felos was absent from this interview.
Did you read my Post #3298?
This FL bill, if passed quickly, could be the deciding factor in saving Terri's life and the lives of others.

Judge extends stay keeping food for brain-damaged Terri Schiavo

Excerpts:
Meantime, the Florida Department of Children & Families moved to intervene in the case Wednesday, hours after Gov. Jeb Bush told reporters he again was seeking a way to keep Terri Schiavo alive.
"We are really elated," Robert Schindler, Terri Schiavo's father, said of the turn of events. "Forty-eight hours to us right now seems like six years. We pray to God and we thank God that we have some time and are very, very thankful that DCF has picked this up."
George Felos, who represents Michael Schiavo, said the DCF move "reeks of the intervention of politics into the case and is an affront to the court."
Thanks!
> Petition a country of Terri's heritage, or any country that is receptive, to grant emergency and immediate citizenship to Terri. The Vatican would be nice! Then Terri would be afforded protection through a foreign government or at least be involved.
snapperjk, you're suggestion is creatively brilliant. As STARWISE pointed out in 3181, there would be "bureaucratic paperwork". Notwithstanding, given the circumstances, I'd be willing to bet the Vatican might be the bureaucracy that could most swiftly act on such a suggestion -- particularly if it was honorary citizenship that was bestowed. Terri is still an American citizen and she'd likely lose it if another country granted her full-fledged citizenship.
I wonder who, or what office, would take care of such a request?
