I'd say each person has to make their own, personal decisions in that situation -- trust your instincts. (Yeah, I've faced an attempted street robbery or two.)

I have faced a home invasion and a shotgun wielding hitman. The hitman I nailed with a classic double in the upper chest and neck. The guy leading the home invasion had my .45 pressed to his forehead before I pulled the trigger.

Gangs, I get stupid with. I hate gangs. Loathe them and if confronted with one I probably would get mouthy or try to kill one of them for spite. I really have a complete and total black hatred for gang member. I hate them enough to loses all common sense. No tears of guilt would ever stream down my face if I killed one, or three or eight. In fact my mood would probably improve exponentially for everyone I tagged.
