St. Louis Post-Dispatch changes syndicated columnists line-up.

There are substantial revisions to our lineup and schedule of syndicated national columnists:

Six columnists from our current lineup - Charles Krauthammer, Jonah Goldberg, Maureen Dowd, Leonard Pitts, David Broder and Ellen Goodman - are continuing, but their work will appear on different days of the week.

We're adding five new columnists to the page - three conservative, two liberal - with an eye toward freshening up the mix and upgrading the quality of the writing and advocacy. Conservative Michael Barone, a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and principal co-writer of the "Almanac of American Politics," has been called the most astute political observer in America. Liberal Peter Beinart, the editor of the New Republic, is credited with having written one of the most influential post-election essays of 2004. They'll be joined here by Kathleen Parker, Paul Krugman and David Brooks. Photos and biographies of all five appear below.

As a result of these changes, the work of seven columnists no longer will appear here. In addition to William Safire, who has retired, they are Clarence Page, George Will, Molly Ivins, Cal Thomas, E.J. Dionne and Mona Charen.

I'm not sure if these changes are a net gain or net loss for conservatives. I am looking forward to Barone and Brooks and we finally get rid of Ivins. But I don't know if I will be able to stomach Krugman. Is Kathleen Parker a good columnist?

Too bad they're not keeping Will, Thomas, and Charen. But thankfully I don't have to rely on the St. Louis Past-Disgrace in order to read them.

Lee to acquire Pulitzer

Lee Enterprises, Incorporated, and Pulitzer Inc. announced late Sunday that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Lee to acquire Pulitzer .... Pulitzer operates 14 daily newspapers, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ...

Maybe it's just a coincidence.

I think I've read Kathleen Parker on Jewish World Review and, if it's the same person, I think you'll like her.

Kathleen Parker is OK, and as a trade for Molly Ivins - well, words aren't sufficient...
