Annan urges Iraq reconciliation

UNITED Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has appealed to all Iraqis for reconciliation "on all sides" after the country's national elections.

US President George W. Bush hailed them the poll as a "resounding success". Mr Annan's statement, issued at the UN in New York as he attended an African Union summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, said reports had indicated that Iraqis "turned out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote".

"It will be some days before final results are known, but current indications are that the elections have been successfully carried out. I wish to pay tribute to the courage of the Iraqi people, and to congratulate the Independent Election Commission of Iraq," the UN chief said.

Mr Annan also paid tribute to Iraqi poll monitors, the country's fledgling security forces and foreign troops who helped provide security for the poll, as well as UN workers who helped support the vote.

"The success of the election augurs well for the transition process," Mr Annan said, referring to the transitional assembly's task of drafting a permanent constitution for Iraq, which is expected to be put to a referendum in October this year.

In a call for Iraqi reconciliation, he said: "It is important to ensure that all individuals, groups and parties who, for whatever reason, were unable or unwilling to take part in the election are now brought into the constitution-making process.

"This is a time for reconciliation on all sides. In this respect I am encouraged by the recent statements of a number of Iraqi political leaders, indicating their willingness to play a part in this process or to allow others to do so."

If this lowlife had his way, Iraqis would still be living in fear of Saddam's midnight raids, death squads and institutionalized rape.

NOW he comes out, after the hard work has been done....

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he forget to thank the US in any shape or form for the success of the elections?

Yes, old sleazy, crooked Annan, slinking in like a snake AFTER the HARD WORK is done. Typical. What a POS, as is the entire U.N.

The janitors are sweeping up the confetti, the lights are dimmed down, and NOW Koffee decides to take the dais??

Comparing Annan to a worthless maggot is insulting to maggots.

No, one single finger pointing up says it much more eloquently :-)

"Kofi Annan has appealed to all Iraqis for reconciliation on all sides"....

Hope all Iraqis appeal to Annan & Co. to blow their goodwill out their asses.

Yes, with great help from all the coalition nations, and very little from the twelve or so UN staffmembers in country to "help" with the election.

What a damn SCUMBAG! The guy who screwed over the Iraqi people with Oil for Fraud has the gall to comment on today's election in a desparate attempt to appear relevant. I would like to wring his neck, too.
