AMHERST - Are the images that now cover the walls outside Hampden Gallery at the University of Massachusetts campus obscene, thought-provoking, crude or ingenious? Some people cannot get past the naked forms in various acts of sex and violence. For others, the drawings in black marker by Austrian artist Heimo Wallner tell a story of society, filled with everything from violence, love, weapons and fame to pop music, torture, virtue and drugs. And for some, it's hard to understand or process the hundreds of figures and their actions.

Asked why the figures are unclothed, the 43-year-old Wallner said, "Under our clothes, we are all naked. " Gee, there's a brilliant rationale for you.

Well, that's the kind of a mural one gets for $1200 grant. Sistine ceiling cost Julius II the equivalent of $200000. One gets what one pays for. Cheapskates!

Time, place and manner regulations are not censorship, and sounds like they might be necessary in this case, although I haven't seen the offending mural.

Well, as John Lennon once said, "There may not be much difference, between Chairman Mao and Richard Nixon, if they both stand naked...."

"Under our clothes, we are all naked. . . "and under a nice coat of paint, we can have naked pictures.

So where are the PICTURES?? You must have pictures for a post like this. Now I'll have to go search for myself.

"I haven't decided if I like it or I don't," said Nick J. Stevens, a junior from Athol who took a few minutes yesterday to look at the mural. Some Athol looking at naked people....

Reminds me of an old joke.
Starving painter is given a task by a Boston matron to paint "Custer's Last Thought's".
Painting uncovered revealed indians in all kinds of weird sexual poses. When asked how that was Custers last thought, the painter said " Custers last thought was "look at all the F***ing indians"".

And for some, it's hard to understand or process the hundreds of figures and their actions. I have always had a difficult time understanding the actions of people who are slightly nuts and try to pass off crap as art! Has nothing to do with nudes or nakedess, has to do with form and content. IMO

"Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to find out if this woman is naked under her clothes."
