Billionaire investor George Soros, the biggest financial contributor to the failed effort to defeat President George W. Bush in November's election, said Democratic challenger John Kerry was a flawed candidate.
Soros, chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC, spent $26 million in last year's campaign that he said was undermined by the candidate he supported.
"Kerry did not, actually, offer a credible and coherent alternative," Soros, 74, said yesterday in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "That had a lot to do with Bush being re-elected."
The comments by the Hungarian-born Soros marked his sharpest criticism of Kerry, a Vietnam War veteran who later spoke against the war and focused his campaign against Bush on the war in Iraq. Republicans gained four seats in the Senate, including the defeat of the Senate's highest-ranking Democrat, Minority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota. Republicans have 55 seats in the 100-seat chamber.
The Kerry campaign "tried to emphasize his role as a Vietnam War hero and downplay his role as an anti-Vietnam War hero, which he was", said Soros. "Had he admitted, owned up to it, I think actually the outcome could have been different."
Alternative Needed
Soros said he also now questions "what the Democratic party stands for." Democrats need to counter "a very effective conservative message machine", he said. "There really needs to be an alternative."
Still, Soros said the money he spent was worthwhile, and that he will remain active in U.S. politics.
"I don't feel it's an investment that's gone bad, because when you stand up for principles you have to do it whether you win or lose," Soros said. "I'm distressed that Bush was re-elected, but I don't feel that I wasted my money."
Soros donated millions to the Media Fund, a group that ...

Is it just me or has Bob Beckel, whom I also despise, been off the reservation and apparently not receiving the Democrat talking points the last couple of times he has appeared on Fox? When Beckel makes sense to me, I start to fear for my sanity, but maybe his fax machine has just been out of order lately.
"a very confused man"
I totally agree!
I have a hard time thinking of Soros as one of the "we". Especially since he tried so hard to financially undermine the election process.
It's self evident that my choices are my choices. Further, I said nothing about my beliefs.
"when Beckel makes sense to me, I start to fear for my sanity"
LOL! I agree! I was stunned by his statements. However, lately I have been writing emails talking about Beckel and how I sure hope FOX keeps putting his face up there because he so vile in his statements about the President, and his negative, negative, whining about the GOP - it's a perfect face for the dems. I begged and pleaded with FOX to keep his face up front - because we're going to be able to recruit repubs right and left.
Hmmmm? I wonder if there's a bunch of us saying the same thing and the public's perception of Beckel finally got through to him. I don't know that for a fact, but I do agree that he has tempered his statements a lot lately.
Nobody was challenging your beliefs.
And .. I was not including Soros in the "we".
Well .. hopefully when we're rich - we're not that stupid! LOL!!
RE: "Well .. hopefully when we're rich - we're not that stupid! LOL!!"
Heck, I sometimes think that wealth is wasted on the wrong people. Too many times when good people attain wealth they let it go to their heads, becoming extravagant, petty, and condescending (just like Soros). If I was rich, the only changes I'd make to my lifestyle would be: a.) eat steak every week and b.) buy a DVD without balancing my bank account.
The first thing - I would tithe. I sure wouldn't want to have a curse on my money.
I would buy my dreamhome (probably a small condo) - and redecorate it - thereby putting lots of that money into the economy - then I'd take my mom to visit her relatives in NY. Then .. if my mom wanted to stay at the home where her sister is - I would foot the bill.
Then I think I would buy my son and his wife a home - or at least give them a super down payment (depending on my resources) - they are Children's Pastors and they deserve some special rewards. Plus a new SUV for my son (they have 3 kids) - and I'd pay for his wife to have driving lessons so she can get her license.
That's just for starters.
By weakness, I meant political weakness, not personal weakness.
Tithings a good one (gotta give God His share), and I might also throw a little money into a few of my more sincere causes and beliefs-- research to find a cure for Cancer (esp. Breast and Prostste), Cerebral Palsy, and AIDS, and make a donation or two to the NRA.
No big, fancy houses with wacky extravagances built in for lazy people. If I want to bowl, I'd go to a bowling Alley. If I want to watch a movie, I'd go to the local theater. If I wanted a new car, I'd get two (and only two, the second just in case the first breaks down).
I just want a normal condo - just because it would be mine - and I could paint it and hang pictures, etc.
And .. donating to good causes would be good too.
Soros wasn't smart enough to know a Skull and Bones "TOMATO CANdidate" setup.
Deal with it George.
Soros reminds me of the Devil, in Paradise Lost, complaining that God, "whom reason hath equalled, force hath made supreme."
On the flip side, he's essentially saying, "We would have won, but our candidate sucked."
Wait a minute... Waitaminute waidaminnit waidaminnit...
I thought Snoros said he was going to Join A Monastery if Bush won??
So like, which monasterary are you like, IN, dude??
What a creep! I thought he said that too - but like all DEMOCRATS/LIBERALS - THEY NEVER MEAN WHAT THEY SAY - NEVER!!
That's also what I meant...
My personal opinion is that President Bush is the strongest, (and other than his dad) the only, statesman since Ronald Reagan.
The rest have been 4th rate politicians.
