You know, I didn't...I caught the visual when we were a half-step from already passing each other; he'd moved on by the time I even had time to absorb what I'd seen.
Is that her son? Didn't know it. Wow, that makes the photo even more poignant.
I can well imagine missing it, most of us weren't ribbon scanners.
The Marine pictured in the article is Casey Owens from Houston. Casey grew up next door to Edd (he spells it funny) Hendee who is currently in Iraq in his role as a conservative talk show host on KSEV. While there, he discovered some difficulties that Marines were having in arming Humvees in Casey's old unit and has contacted his best friend back in Houston who owns a company called "Flanges, Forgings, and Fittings". The owner of the company started gathering the necessary parts to make the improvements, and KSEV Radio has raised over $80,000 in about a week to provide the fittings that allow the armament to be installed. Check out Casey's story at http://www3.caringbridge.org/tx/caseyowens/, and read more about Edd at http://www.lonestartimes.com.
Good, will do.
I was just thinking they might wonder what Gramma is doing..
(there was a much greater male to female ratio back when I was in service)
Thanks
Medals would be worn on Dress Blue Alphas. Corporal Owens is wearing Dress Blue Bravos.
Casey Owens, a wounded marine, salutes as his mother Janna Owens cries during the inaugural speech by U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) on Capitol Hill in Washington, January 20, 2005. President Bush (news - web sites) was sworn in for a second term on Thursday and pledged to work to heal a country divided by the Iraq (news - web sites) war. Bush, who begins his second term with the lowest approval rating of any returning president except Richard Nixon, said in his inaugural address, 'We have known divisions, which must be healed to move forward in great purposes, and I will strive in good faith to heal them.' Corporal Owens is a United States Marine, not a soldier.
Oh boy, now you've done it. God bless him and those like him.
Reuters. Sheesh. What a caption. (They probably think the photo is unflattering to the POTUS.)
Very moving. This Marine, and all his fellow service men and women, are the best possible answer to blowhard, so-called American, Ted Kennedy.
All medals have a corresponding ribbon, including the Purple Heart.
He is a Marine!
This is the second time today that I've been moved to tears.
Thanks for this post.
Go America...Go Iraq!
So young and his whole life ahead of him, yet he remains patriotic despite his misfortune. I feel unworthy, too.
I hope you don't mind, but I copied your post to my blog. I did put a link to this post. Check it out at http://uh60punk.blogspot.com
Thanks for posting.
