Afghanistan was such a huge success that the former Taliban, who were supposed to disrupt those elections, were actually chewed out by their leaders for being so ineffectual. In Afghanistan, people stood in line for hours in a foot of snow with nothing but a blanket wrapped around them to keep them warm while they made their way to the polls. In Afghanistan, the streets were supposed to run red with blood... as has been threatened in Iraq. Instead, the streets ran strong with courage and voter turnout was huge.

Because we didn't want to give the Ba'athists the keys wholesale. We at least wanted to divide up their organizations and get a chance to vett the recruits.
