SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - An Australian polling station for Iraqi exiles voting in their homeland's historic election was closed for an hour on Saturday after a riot broke out and a suspicious bag prompted a bomb scare, organizers said.
Bernie Hogan, the head of Australia's overseas voting program, said the riot erupted when a group of around 20 protesters started yelling insults at voters leaving the polling center in a Sydney neighborhood dominated by Iraqi Shiites.
Hogan said the protesters were holding up the same black flag with white lettering that has appeared as a backdrop in videos released by Iraqi insurgents featuring foreign hostages begging for their lives.
Thair Wali, an Iraqi adviser for the International Organization for Migration, said the protesters' flag and Arabic slogans identified them as Wahabis, followers of an austere brand of Sunni Islam practiced mostly in Saudi Arabia.
Wahabis are suspected of having influence over militants waging a 17-month insurgency in Iraq.
Wali said the fight broke out after the protesters took pictures of voters.
"This is scary for the people, taking photos of the voting," he said.
Many of Australia's estimated 80,000 Iraqis declined to register for the election, fearing their votes would make relatives in Iraq terrorist targets.
Around 50 people wrestled in the street, threw punches and hit one another over the head with their shoes - an insult in Iraqi culture, Hogan said.
The polling center was closed and police cordoned off the area while the contents of an unattended backpack were examined, a spokesman for the New South Wales state police said on a condition of anonymity. The bag contained water and biscuits.
Australia is one of 14 countries where Iraqi exiles can vote by absentee ballot.

"This is scary for the people, taking photos of the voting," he said.
Elections, apparently, scare the hell out of the wahabis.
They don't try that cr*p here.
These people are like a cancer. If they like the wahabi lifestyle so much, why don't they just stay the f__k where they are and keep their retarded religious beliefs where others will appreciate it.
I don't know how the Aussie authorities would handle this. I do find it interesting that these maniacs didn't rear their ugly heads in this country. Target practice, anyone?
I hope someone got pictures of the protesters. Isn't it illegal to harrass at the polling booths?
This article says nothing about the authorities cracking down on the perpetrators.
I think these insane people wahabies are bad enough to destroy the slightest value left in our Islam. It is expected from them to do everything against human being .
The protesters must have been American Democrat traitors led by Teddy Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, etc.
More peaceful Muslims in Western nations.
I serve Jesus Christ, El Shaddai, Yahwew, Jehovah Elohim and we have the best of the best on this planet including our military. All of these numbskulls worship Allah and all that they can do is still throw rocks, fists or shoes while the majority are starving, living in caves or homes and huts that still have dirt floors. Well maybe that's because Allah's a DEAD idol!!!
These fools might want to rethink a few things-

You bet yer ass. The Sig would be very happy. Well maybe the Kimber...?
Pretty soon the world will wise up, and declare open season on these assholes...
There has been far too much slack given and too much tolerance to their lunacy and murderous behavior...
Time to terrorize the terrorist..
Semper Fi
Seems like the Aussie authorities did just fine. No one reported injured (?), etc. This isn't an Aussie problem, strictly Iraqi. Aussies will keep the peace, and leave the
Iraqi political stuff to the Iraqis.
Wouldn't that be "You bet shiraz"?
This is why Islam is not a religion, it is a violent, murderous hate-filled political system.
Get the fire hose......
From the following website:
http://www.fixedearth.com/Allah%2C%20Moon%20god.htm
Historically, "Allah was not invented by Muhammad or revealed for the first time in the Quran. In fact, the word Allah was used in Arabia long before Muhammad was born.... There are over fifty reference works that state...that Allah was the Moon-god in pre-Islamic times.... For example, The Dictionary of Non-Classical Mythology states that Allah, originally applied to the moon; he seems to be preceded by Ilmaqah, the moon god...Allat; the female counterpart to Allah."3
In the report on the Public School episode in California it is stated that:
"Arabia was a pagan nation that worshipped over 300 gods. One of those was
the moon god named, al-ilah. Legend has it that the moon god mated with the
sun god and had two daughters, both of whom were worshipped as goddesses.
When Muhammad claimed to have had his vision and revelation from Gabriel
he chose al-ilah as the god to build his army around.
Muhammad shortened the name, al-ilah, to Allah, and declared that he alone
should be worshipped. He forbade the worship of the daughters.
To this day, a crescent moon can be found at the front of every mosque,
acknowledging that Allah was, and is the moon god...." 4
All accounts go to some pains to stress the point that modern Moslems (in the aggregate at least) do not think they are worshipping a pagan moon god when they worship Allah. However, as Islamic scholar Dr. Morey justifiably points out:
"The contemporary meaning of a word cannot be used to refute its
original meaning in history." 5
Since my own understanding of the religion of Islam has been limited to one careful reading of the Quran (Koran) [HERE]...and some general historical facts, I was not aware of this moon-god origin of Allah from pre-Islamic Arab paganism. However much this fact might be repressed or pooh-poohed by modern Moslems or anybody else, it definitely rates a 10 on a 1-10 scale of important facts in my book. After all, we are talking about a religion claimed by nearly one in five people on the earth!
Why is there a crescent moon on the front of every mosque? (Why is the same crescent moon on the Fez of a Shriner?? Why does the definition of a Shriner include this: {"Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine"}?? Why do Shriners meet in "temples" with Arabic names? Who will open that can of worms?!)
