They can't even acknowledge its existence in the most extreme circumstances. I saw a program on PBS once (Yes, I watch PBS occasionally. Please don't hate me!) which had a distinguished jurist (I think it was one of the Supremes) having a discussion with a bunch of young students (late high school or college) and he could not get even one of them to admit that any act (or actor) was evil. He brought up some horrific real life examples, and none of the kids would commit to the word evil.
We might as well lose the word from the language. I wish I had a tape of that show. It would be worth paying money to public television - in this one instance - to get a copy of that program.
P.S. - Mostly, I just watch "New Yankee Workshop" and "Ask This Old House" on PBS. And if anybody knows that Norm Abrams is a flaming liberal, I don't want to hear about it.
Norm Abrams is the best and Tom Silva is the very best.
I was thinking of extremely extreme cases, such as Hitler (it helps that he's wrongly perceived as being right wing). But yes, you're right, especially about kids. I see it in kids all the time. They can hardly bring themselves to call something wrong let alone evil.
