Numerous NT students exchanged heated arguments Wednesday during the "Capture the Illegal Immigrant Game," put on by NT's chapter of the Young Conservatives of Texas. The purpose of the game was to show the organization's opposition to President Bush's temporary worker plan.
Around 30 students, mostly Hispanic, began engaging members of the organization in a debate because they felt all the facts were not being properly presented. "We want to know! We want to know!" the group chanted. "You shouldn't make a game of these people who suffer for their families," Kristy Cisneros, Carrolton senior, said. "It's a mockery"
Three Young Conservatives members walked around campus wearing bright orange t-shirts with the words "Illegal Immigrant" on the front and "Catch me if u can" on the back for the game. People were encouraged to find these members and ask them why the organization does not support Bush's plan. The plan grants amnesty to immigrants with a job or job offer lasting for three years. The amnesty can be ended if workers do not remain employed, break program rules or break a law.
Participants who caught the "immigrants" were rewarded with a 100 Grand candy bar. Michele Connole, Lewisville junior and Young Conservatives of Texas publicity director, said the purpose of the event was to bring illegal immigration to the forefront of campus debate. "We're a border state," Connole said. "We suffer from the draining of our economy." For the group, the issue of security is another main point against granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. They are concerned republicans in office are not addressing this issue. "We see this as a homeland security issue," Connole said. "This is where we break away from the republicans."
Many students were not so much concerned about the message as they were about how it was presented. "I do understand in some part where they are coming from," Jorge Luna, Dallas junior, said. "But I think it could have been handled in a better way." The Young Conservatives said they feel the event was successful, and the organization achieved their objective.
"I see a ton of good coming out of this," said Chris Brown, Fort Worth junior and Young Conservatives of Texas chairman. "They're here, they're talking to us, we're talking to them." For more information on the temporary worker program, visit http://www.whitehouse.gov.
Do Illegals get in-state tuition rates in Texas while OK or PA kids have to pay top rate?
This really makes me outraged.
Everyone knows that Mexifornia is due for a bailing out. That does not mean that Texas is. Though I suspect they have some problems also. Proud of these students for telling it like it is.
I think it's going to take the college crowd to bring this issue to a head across the country. Too many of us older folks are bitchin' but either don't have the time or energy to march or protest whereas the young kids do. Also, people with "nothing to lose" have nothing to lose.
It is high time we put a wrench to this Mexican safety valve we call our southern border. Whatever generation you are from it is high time you speak loud and clear about what you expect from your government in this regard. They are getting the message. Back it up!!! Call your representatives.
-"You shouldn't make a game of these people who suffer for their families," Kristy Cisneros, Carrolton senior, said. "It's a mockery"-
Sorry, Kristy, but the mockery starts by Mexicans flipping us the bird as they cross our borders illegally, then sucking up all our hard-earned dollars in the form of human services.
You want respect, you'll have to earn it.
