OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious.
Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday.
Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower."
"Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said.
Well with his heart condition he can't take any chances of getting Ill and it looks as if it was very cold and it was snowing. So what else should he wear?
This is just too trivial for comment.
The guy behind VP has a muskrat on his head.
My husband had heart trouble and took blood thinners as part of his medication. It could be that the VP is also on blood thinners which would cause him to feel cold weather more acutely.
Perhaps he didn't feel well and didn't want to risk heart attack number four, so dressed warmly.
I got creamed on this same view point on another thread. I agree with you and am glad to see this thread seems to recognize one's right to notice without calling them names.
excuse me, but if it were 35 degrees in Poland when Cheney was there, it would have been a relative heat wave and he likely would have worn a black wool coat... I'd bet my bottom dollar it was no 35 degrees at that ceremony. The Inaugural ceremony at the Capitol was maybe half an hour, it was sunnym abd the stands had some heaters. There is NO comparison... but DO try again.
Was that Traficant?
Yes, there's no comparison between a re-innaguration in a powerful, peaceful and prosperous country such as ours and the commemoraiton and remembreance of the systematic murder of millions of innocents during the most horrible war the world has ever seen. Who would you rather show respect for?
I have one of those Extreme Cold Weather parkas in my closet from the AF. Just like Dick's. It's very snuggily warm. Pull the hood around your head and snug it up. You can trudge around forever and feel like you're still in bed:)
It's very important he keeps very warm, he can't get sick. I don't care what the hell he wears.
You got it right. du jour was my intent.
Are you so shallow that you think it more important to dress "up" than to stay warm? By all accounts it was freezing and he was dressed sensibly not like an egotistical fop that thinks looks are always more important then comfort.
Cheney looks like an extra from Ice Station Zebra.
This is why I love Cheney; function over form every time.
You Brits are the salt of the earth.
We are thankful that enough of the Cheney Clan and friends remained in Ohio to turn the last election in the right direction.
We too prefer comfort over style, in Church or anywhere else.
He was thinking about having four heart attacks and how dangerous the cold can be for a man with his health history.
