Cheney Mocked By Media Over Auschwitz Attire

OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious.

Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday.

Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower."

"Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said.

I Bet he was warmer than anyone there.

Those Russian fur hats are much warmer than a knit ski cap.

The man has a serious heart condition for cryin' out loud. I think he oughta trot out his familiar old "f*** off" when taken to task over negotiating dangerous weather conditions in appropriate attire.

How much media controversy did Al Qatie generate with that Mimi Bobeck outfit from hell? Now there was an abomination.

Speaking of fashion horrors, I think I've found her next ball gown:

If Bill Clinton wore such a parka, the MSN would he hailing the wisdom of such a choice, considering his recent health issues.

Sounds more like Cheney was practical and dressed for the weather dejure, rather than to make a fashion statement at the expense of his health. What can be more immature and asinine than a reporter carping about one's dress, rather than the subject of the occasion?

If you pompous bastards don't like our President and Vice President-you can kiss our ass!!!!!!!!!

Just for the sake of clarification-that diatribe was not intended for you, Bigturbowski.

The real question is what does one wear to a site of a mass grave in 32 degree weather when you have a heart ailment?

I would wear exactly what Cheney has on and I don't have a heart condition. I am sure he was wearing something nice under the coat. You don't hold black tie events outside in freezing weather. If your going to call people out, tell all those people to take off their hats and show the dead some respect. After all, the people who died there had barley any clothes when they died, they surly didn't have nice jacket and a hat. Making a issue out of what Cheney is wearing is laughable when you consider what all those people who died there were wearing.

But appearance is PART of respect. I know it's hard for this modern t-shirt&sweats, selfishly-concerned-about-"comfort" (which I think is over-rated) society to understand, but you *show respect* by even *making* the *effort* to look good for people - any people, dead or alive, on a date or just passing by.

If it was Clinton wearing an outfit like this, Freepers would be calling him all sorts of names and deriding him for being a hick.

Who the heck wears a parka and snow boots to a formal event like this? A cashmere suit with cashmere sweater, thermal underwear and a long cashmere overcoat would have been just as warm.

**One of the things I love about Dick Cheney is that he puts little emphasis on looks and much emphasis on utility. The sign of an intelligent man.**

This is one confident intelligent man who does not need the support and certainly does not crave it. God Bless Dick Cheney

Vice President Chaney looked exactly like what he is. An American in Europe.

So, Americans dress like hicks?

Anyway, what business does a fashion editor have saying ANYTHING that has ANYTHING to do with the HOLOCAUST!!!!??????

Well, to quote that old Billy Crystal character "It is better to look "mahvelous" than to be "mahvelous!"

Apparently that's part of the Dem party platform.

Idiots!!

Absolutely he is dressed how he and countless others in his home state dress for that weather, despite the business suits he normally wears at heart he is a cowboy. I have read that even with his normal business suits he often wears cowboy boots. Dick Cheney is a one off and he is a loyal servant but you cannot contain him in the box.

I have to agree that on such a solemn occasion the VP could have worn a warm top coat rather than his snow mobile togs.

Auschwitz was liberated by the US military

Incorrect. Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians. The Americans did liberate Dachau, however.

**Maybe the media should worry about what Prince Harry is wearing and not Cheney. Wasn't the prince supposed to go with his Dad?**

Unfortunately no we in Britain were to busy sucking up to the Germans to send anyone of real importance. Jack Straw did attend but the Royal presence was Prince Edward. Blair was at an economic conference with Clinton and BONO and then hurriedly flew back to the UK to speak at a memorial service at Westminster Hall. I think this sums up how little we in Britain actually when it come to it actually support our Jewish brethren.
