Defend the border!
World Net Daily ^ | January 28, 2005 | Joseph Farah

Did you ever get the feeling the border was better defended by the Alamo than it is today?

Yet, despite the fact that millions of foreigners invade our country, break our laws, rob us of billions in tax dollars and provide cover for terrorists, drug dealers and arms merchants hell-bent on destroying what is left of our civilization, the Bush administration is unconcerned.

Even though the president signed a bill authorizing 2,000 new border agents, Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge said President Bush will not ask Congress for enough money to fund them.

As part of the intelligence bill passed last month, Congress proposed nearly doubling the number of Border Patrol agents by adding 10,000 over five years. But Ridge scoffed at such an increase, saying it would be an inefficient use of homeland security funds.

"The notion that you're going to have 10,000 is sort of a fool's gold," Ridge told USA Today. "It's nice to say you're going to have 10,000 more Border Patrol agents in five years, but what other part of Homeland Security do you want to take the money from?"

Ridge said it makes more sense to pay for a combination of more agents and better technology, such as ground sensors and cameras. But he didn't say he was going to do that. He just said it makes more sense.

I'll tell you what makes sense: Defending borders. Listening to the will of the people. Honoring the rule of law.

These are concepts not understood in Washington.

The same people who are telling us our nation is in a life-and-death struggle with evil terrorists determined to infiltrate and destroy the American way of life tell us there is no need to defend the borders.

I'm no military expert, but it seems obvious to me the first objective in any conflict is to "secure the perimeter." In national security parlance, that is the same as defending our borders. The Bush administration wants no part of this common-sense prescription – even though, according to polls, it would be the most popular political move he could make.

An Opinion Research Corp. survey released last week showed the No. 1 priority of registered voters across the country is border defense and homeland security. It was – far and away – the top military or foreign priority for 43 percent of the respondents. A distant second, at 19 percent, was intelligence gathering. Just 17 percent thought international aid and diplomacy should be the nation's most important objective.

When voters were asked to choose their highest, second and third priorities from the list of issues, and their top choices were combined, defense of U.S. borders was the clear winner at 77 percent.

But Washington doesn't care. The will of the people means nothing to the Bush administration or, apparently, to most members of Congress.

Neither do they care about the rule of law. If they did, they would see that the immigration laws on the books would be enforced. They would look at the U.S. Constitution and recognize that their powers are limited, but that among those powers authorized is the defense of the country.

Ultimately, we can't defend the American people by deploying our military to Iraq and Afghanistan and a hundred other countries around the world. We can project military force there, but we can't protect the lives of Americans. That work needs to be done here at home. And that work starts with the defense of the borders.

I know there is important work to be done in Iraq and Afghanistan – work that is essential to reducing the risk of future terrorist attacks.

But that risk will never be reduced solely through foreign engagement. The most important work needs to be done at home – in securing the perimeter, in defending our borders.

Hey Mr.Ohio, with all due respect, please take your head out of your ass and wake up. The problem is coming your way soon enough and eventhough you live in your insulated suburb in Ohio you are paying the price right now for the elitist RINO policies forcing illegals onto us so business can have cheap labor. Until you experience the hell that is a border state then maybe you should just keep watching Oprah and Dr.Phil and not try to hurt yourself with critical thought. BTW thanks for your service.

Build a 20 foot high brick wall with razor wire on top from the Gulf to the Pacific. Place National Guardsmen on top and give them permission to kill anybody who attempts to climb the wall.

Your proposal is a few million bricks short of realistic.

The people elected those bureaucrats, or at least the people that appointed them.

The states make the laws on how most of the benefits are doled out, not the federal government. The state governments need to stop blaming the feds for not maintaining a closed border, and start removing the reasons for those people to come here.

I think 2000 more border patrol agents is a good idea, but it's not going to make a huge difference in stopping illegal immigration. We currently have around 11,000 agents which is 2000 more than when Clinton was in office. Another 2000 will make our extremely porous borders a little less porous, but the majority will still get through.

The law that allows the border patrol to hire 2000 more agents didn't provide funding to hire them. It's just lip service from Congress on the issue.

The department of homeland security apparently feels that the money they have is better spent on hiring a smaller number of new agents and spending more on technological advancements to make the agents they have more effective.

The department of homeland security doesn't have an unlimited budget. Bush does deserve the blame for not asking for money to fund the 2000 new agents in his budget proposal. He does need to be more fiscally responsible, but I don't think this is getting the priority it deserves.

Congress still has the ability to allocate the funds to hire those agents and direct that it should be spent on that purpose. I don't expect that they will do so, because I don't think they were serious about it when they passed the provision in the original law. They just wanted to be on record as voting for it, and the liberals want to be able to blame Bush when it doesn't happen, even though they are the ones that have the responsibility of creating and passing the budget.

If we really want to get control of the illegal immigrant problem, we're going to have to attack it at the state and local level. Our borders are too large for us to really be effective at stopping enough of the immigrants at the border.

More agents is a good step in the right direction, but it's a small step toward solving a massive problem.

Three things - low tech, all this discussion about needing more agents and unmanned aircraft, new technology is a bunch of crap fed by the RINOs to distract uneducated citizens on what it will take. Ready, here ya go:

1) Take away all the benefits for non citizens
2) Penalize employers for hiring illegals
3) Build a wall (just like they have done in Isreal)

Thats it, most of the illegals will either leave on their own or be forced to proper the legals channels for residency. Either way Americans would then be in control not the other way around.

The sound of hand clapping in deafining.

very good. You know how much that wall will cost? You know there are always ways around walls right? I love how you blame the RINOS for everything. That's just classic.

I agree with most of what you said. I think the most effective thing that could be done at the federal level, is making policies that force the mexican govt. to change and reform. Our govt. doesn't have any problem manipulating us this way, so why not the corrupt mexican gpvt.? That would stop the flood of people, and put a hurt on the corruption.

I won't be happy until vicente and his elitist friends are pinnatas.

Hmmmm let me see current estimate for the net costs of illegals to the state of CA alone is around 10 billion a year. Wonder what it is for the entire US?????? How about things that you cant put a value on like when your family is murdered or injured in an accident due to illegals. How about the failing schools and hospitals overpacked with illegals unwilling and unable to pay. How about stagnat wages for middle and poor class Americans due to illegals working either for less or under the table. How much to build a wall vs hiring 20,000 border patrol agents.

20,000 agents x $50K/yr = $1,000,000,000

Hmmm that doesnt even take into account the cost of training, support equipment, etc... Probably double that figure easily.

The wall in Isreal cost about 8 million dollars per mile - based on this I think we could see a cost savings in less than a year.

The evidence is before you whether you want to see it or not. Dont be blinded just because you think all RINOs are good some are just as bad (if not worse) than libs. A true conservative see through the crap and stands on principle - there are not many of those.

Believe it or not this is one of the purposes of the much hated NAFTA.

The reason the Mexico supports these illegal aliens is that they send back huge amounts of money to their families back in Mexico, and it's a huge boost to their economy.

NAFTA is intended to help improve the economy in Mexico to the point where they are less reliant on money coming in from illegal aliens and other illegal sources.

Other than that there isn't a lot the administration can do to get Mexico to cooperate with us. If Mexico cooperates, they end up losing a substantial source of money that is shoring up their weak economy.

The only real way we can encourage their cooperation is crack down on illegal immigration, and then offer something like Bush's guest worker program as an encouragement to work with us. However, the crackdown has to come first, or the guest worker program is pointless.

I'm afraid you're right; the '06 midterms will be the lib-dems' '94 "Contract With America", and the pendulum will begin swinging to the leftist loonies, with '08 right behind.

Why is the GOP so adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?

There is a solution here. How about reassigning the IRS agents to the borders? Their sheer numbers would overpower the illegals.
