Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge "What are you going to do, shoot us?" by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers two men and two women at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

One of the many reasons I rarely drink -- I want to be totally aware of my surroundings at all times.
I am sure!
Sort of. Not formally introduced, but that was mostly because he was in full rant mode over his 20-year-old case...
Bitterness is terrible... maybe they give him medication when he's on the radio. Didn't he substitute host for someone on WABC once? It was a good show I recall. I do know he's a folk hero for a lot of people.
I sometimes regret that I didn't back up and run him down, or at least let him grab the door handle and then take him for a ride.
I would have let him grab and then took off. That way less of a chance of going to jail over his drunk ass.
Her choice was right.
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. I truly believe that if she'd realized that issuing dares to a thug with a gun (a gun he'd just used to hit her fiance) when she is unarmed and vulnerable isn't a good and had just kept her mouth shut, she'd almost certainly be alive today.
The one thug mate had told the gunman that he had gone too far. Her words were emboldened, perhaps, by that remark and the gunman's reaction. It was her read to make -- and only hers! There is nothing to indicate that had she given the money over that she would not have been shot.
I suspect at that point she would have been. Blood had already been drawn. Emotions were already over the top.
In fact she may have been shot by the gunman in counter reaction to the words of the other thug. The gunman wanted to show that he was the big dog, that no one could call him off.
That may well be what happened, but I still believe that when most people in NYC read or heard about this tragic story, they slapped their foreheads and their first thought was "Don't talk to the guy with the gun!"
>>she'd been a victim of an extremely violent crime once already>>
Amazing that she would keep that sassy mouth even after one crime... she was a feminist alright.
On a local (Boston) newscast, there was a story about this crime. The murdered gal attended college in Boston some of the college's staff was interviewed. The news reporter ended the story by saying "Friends say that Nicole was socially conscious and would NOT want her murderer punished."
"Would you do that once they've pulled out a gun and have already pistol-whipped another guy?"
Maybe. Hard to say until it happens. Sounds like she was yelling at the guy for hitting her friend in the face. In anycase, she seemed fearless. I don't second guess anyone who is put into this sort of situation.
I'm assuming that this guy and his friend are junkies who won't be able to keep their mouths shut about this and it's just a matter of time before they are caught. I'm still going to walk around the neighborhood at odd hours and not let a few cowardly thugs make me adjust my habits.
I didn't say anything about this story for a while for obvious reasons for those who know me.
I lived in this nabe before it went chi-chi and I know of the people who remain there, as well as the clueless morons who moved in. Basically, to be blunt, these idiots mouthed off to some tee-offed teenager with issues...holding a gun. You just don't do that in a stressful situation, especially a botched robbery where the intended victim is so clueless he attempts to walk away pretending it didn't happen.
Hey, look, I'm sorry this woman died, but she was in a situation where she needed to make a different decision than she chose. I don't know if it was out of arrogance, bigotry, lack of understanding where she was, or a combination, but her and the boyfriend did everything you are never supposed to do with criminals with guns.
Only for those who obey such laws, which doesn't include the street thugs. Or the more organized criminals either for that matter.
Also don't walk away from your girlfriend. This guy is Pussy Galore in my book of shame. Up there with guys who trannied out and hopped in the Titanic lifeboats. Real creep.
I don't blame the victim. Even if she told him to kiss her pretty fembot ass, that didn't give him dibs to shoot her.
110% of the fault of this murder lies with the thug-punk that shot her.....same as the same subhuman vermin that nearly killed and gangbanged the jogger in the NW corner of Central Park 15 years ago....and subsequently got off in the spirit of New York's Bonfire of the Vanities neurosis over "color".
My business partner and I were mugged on Colombus in the low 90s near some lower middle class housing in broad afternoon back in 82. We fought them off and my buddy had to go= to Lenox Hill for stitches. We looked for them later that day with two big Irish cops and we were out for some getback. They were of course lower Morningside Heights Black-Puerto Rican or whatevers.... later that nite after imbibing at Rouelles, we went looking again up Colombus and found one of them on a stoop drunk and smoking dope...alone...about 3AM.
We wore his ass out....like Sonny Corleone on Carlo on the fire escape stoop.
Bet homey thought twice about screwing with Mississippi peckerwoods again.
Not to say local tuffs from Bay Ridge or Bensonhurst wouldn't have done the same thing.
I'm sorry for the gal....she didn't deserve it. Why do stupid teens do such vile things?
the usual I'd guess....intergenerational uprbringing of where's daddy and mom's a crack whore. Sad....but if he's a teen he'll be out even before he's middle aged and she will have long ago moulded.
that ain't right.
down here we shoot back...a lot.
you know....I bought a Mossberg Pump at a gun store off lower Broadway near Canal in 85 or so....hard to imagine eh?
"Juggling the crime stats around to make the public think that crime is down is a political ploy, one that Guiliani was particularly good at"
Murders were at 2400 annually under Dinkins and down to 600 under Giuliani. Are these figures juggled?
You should be ashamed. I don't care how left her politics were, she was an innocent victim in a brutal homicide.
The killer(s) should be apprehended, tried, convicted and executed.
