Pride and joy and greed and sex
That's what makes our town the best
Pride and joy and dirty dreams and still surviving on the street
And look at me, I'm in tatters, yeah
I've been battered, what does it matter
Does it matter, uh-huh
Does it matter, uh-huh, I'm a shattered
Don't you know the crime rate is going up, up, up, up, up
To live in this town you must be tough, tough, tough, tough, tough!
You got rats on the west side
Bed bugs uptown

You forgot to mention his greatest political achievement, when he was elected to Parliament Funkadelic. : )

I'm a borderline nervous wreck or lose cannon. One night when some "Chicken Ricans" (in the words of Freeper Hermann the Cherusker) on 4th Ave in Brooklyn did the old "got any spare money" routine, I simply replied "get the f-ck out of here" and they moved on.

When Handsome Dick wrote the song, he was obviously using an old RCA with bunny ears to pick up John Rowland on WNEW, not the Murdochized WNYW. Its still Channel Five in Brooklyn, btw.

"I had a carry permit in NYC for 19 years...and then Giuliani came in and I (along with thousands of others) could not re-up for it. Just remember that fact (and that he supports late term abortions) before we all get goopy eyed about him running for POTUS."

Fer the most part, I like and respect Guiliani, but I don't think I want him as the POTUS...MUD

Hi All-

Rudy Giuliani was a fantastic mayor that the country respected, but I don't believe he could "scale" that success to the world stage. He is a bit too much of a control freak who wouldn't be able to cede things that need to be done to the many capable people who would be available to him... Just my humble $0.02 to the matter.

In my first year in Manhattan, I was walking down E. 53rd at Park n my way to the 6 train on Lexington at about 9pm. There were only a couple people on the street.

A black teen thug walked up from behind me and next to me and said, "Gimme fi dollar."

I said "What"?

He said "Gimme fi dollar."

I said "F- You."

He said "Gimme fi dollar or that dude in front of you is going to stab you."

At that point I noticed that he was working with a buddy who was walking a head of me, but then slowed down trying to corner me.

Immediately I walked right across 53rd to the other side of the street very directly, but didn't run.

They did the same thing.

I increased the speed of my walk and they didn't.

So I was able to make it to Lexington and get into a cab.

I'm sure they mugged someone else that night.

It was really like the discovery channel. Two predators. But they're probably dead now or in prison. Thank goodness for Giuliani. I wish he was still mayor.

Poltically Incorrect Observation Alert: Da Bruthas are not as easily intimidated as Latinos, Asians, or whites. The first two groups, in my experience, tend to run at the first sign of aggressiveness.

Agreed...although I'm sure he'll throw his hat in the ring in '07, I'm not sure the GOP is ready fer a BlueCity/BlueState moderate to take over when Dubyuh's done his time.

I reckon we'll see, though...MUD

Actually, with a gun, your odds are better. Some researchers collected statistics on people who reacted to muggers in different ways and what was most likely to happen to them.

The victims who resisted with a knife were the most likely to get killed.

The victims who resisted with no weapon were the next most likely to get killed.

The victims who did not resist at all were next on the list.

The victims who resisted with a gun were the least likely to get killed.

Just remember, even if you don't resist at all the criminal might still kill you. Having a gun greatly improves your chances of surviving an encounter.

Also, criminals won't always have the element of surprise. The "suddenly appear and point a gun" thug is not the only kind there is. Usually, there will be some warning sign - people approaching in a threatening or suspicious manner, footsteps behind you, something like that. Odds are, you will have a warning of danger and time to draw your weapon.

Plus, criminals aren't exactly the best of shots. I don't think the average criminal practices shooting (including quickly drawing a concealed weapon) every week like I do.

I'm convinced that we are going to hear cries and howls for more gun control from Hollyweird now.

Maybe so. But the one thing that would have in all likelyhood prevented this tragedy was some strict tongue control.

If it's between Giuliani and whatever democrat gets propped up, I won't be casting a vote for POTUS in 08. Gun control should not be imposed on law abiding citizens. It's unconstituional. Period.

If I see a punk suddenly "break stride" and come towards me, I'm prepared.

I suspect that the people who practice reflex shooting, combat shooting etc enjoy it. So it's as much as a hobby as a self-defense thing. I've tried it for kicks and it bored me out of my mind. My preference is to practice minimal street smarts in where I go and when...

"Locks are not meant to keep HONEST people out. They will only keep out the lazy thieves. Honest people will stay out even if there is a lock."

Um, take a happy pill. I only used an old cliche' so chill

Jeffrey Sparks, fiancee: "There were other people with him. There were two girls and another guy. When he hit me the other guy was apologizing for him. He was saying 'hey it doesn't have to be this way. My friend's just freaking out. We just need money.'"

Well, if you find it boring, that's your opinion. I enjoy practicing reflex shooting/combat shooting/whatever you want to call it. Maybe it's unusual (especially for a woman), but that's just the way I am. I would still practice it even if I thought it was boring because it might save my life one day.

I try to avoid dangerous places, but there are some dangers that just can't be avoided. It's better to be prepared.
