COLLEGE STATION - An advertisement that questioned John Kerry's Vietnam War military service would capture a nation's attention during the 2004 presidential election, but the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks had a greater impact during the race, the manager for the Kerry-Edwards campaign said Wednesday.
"This was an election, from my point of view, that was completely overshadowed by 9/11," Mary Beth Cahill said at an election postmortem session at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University.
Ken Mehlman, who managed the Bush-Cheney campaign, emphasized how the "new media" of the Internet and cable TV networks, like Fox News, changed how people gather and disseminate information about candidates.

The election was overshadowed by 9-11, right. Cahill telegraphs why the Dems keep losing - their quest for power is more important to them than the safety of the nation.
We live in a post 911 world. The democrats still do not get that and they deserve to lose. They ran their campaign on 910 thinking. Hell, in their primary debates they argued about gay marriage while a war was going on.
But first, democrats ignored history and elected a northeastern liberal, which Americans continually reject. Then they coronated their candidate without a tough primary fight. Kerry went unchallenged. When the Swift ads hit, he was proven to have a glass jaw.
The media did heavy lifting for them, but Dan Rather's lies did not help either.
Look at the threads and comments over on DU and you will see how right you are. These people are emotionally immature--i.e., they don't WANT 9-11 to have changed the world, so they will pretend it didn't, and cover their ears and keep saying "NO, IT WAS AN ABERRATION BUSH IS USING TO CONTROL US!!!!"
Our culture is one where 45 year old men still read comic books regularly and want their kids to be their friends, and then read Dr. Phil books to answer their questions. The DU crowd are the embodiment of this--the politics of wishful thinking.
What is hilarious is that anyone reports what Cahill says. Anyone who didn't understand the importance and power of the swift boat ads and John ONeill's story was so, so foolish I don't understand how they could ever get hired for another job in politics. Talk about not understanding Americans!!!
There are countless Americans who were waiting for people like the Swift boat vets to stand up and claim what should have been theirs long ago.....a public display of respect and gratitude.
The left stole it from us once and many , it appears, were not going to let it happen twice.
yeayyyyy!
Yes, it is amazing. A traitor can actually get 50 million votes.
Mary Beth Cahill is an idiot, I hope she has a long career in politics.
When will the RATS get that the reason they lost was Lurch himself. The guy could not or would not take a position on anything. He took every side of every issue hoping not to offend anybody to gather all the votes he could. He has no integrity or core values, and what drove him was ego. The American people saw this and did not want this guy as a war time leader.Simple as that!
Re#12 Oh, the 'Rats know, they just can't admit it on the record. Nor will they tell Kerry to his face. Hence, his arrogant assumption that he will get another chance in '08 which is not going to happen. If need be, the 'Rat friendly MSM will revisit the Swifties' charges and, lo and behold, find them credible and true. Kerry is done....
How the hell are the terrorists competing for the "hearts and minds" of the Iraqi people, as Ted Kennedy said, by giving out pamplets telling them they will be killed if they vote?
Just saw your post! Your right! I think everyone knows Kerry is done but Keryy himself. My boyfriend just informed mE that Lurch will appear on '' Meet The Press'' this Sunday to announce he may run again in 2008. LOL! This guy is truly nuts, and that probably is why hes been making so much noise lately so people don't forget him. UUUGGHHH This guy is so clueless or perhaps he still believes the Presidency is his destiny cause his initials are JFK!
Yep. That's my assessment. Meanwhile, Hillary is making noises and moving to the center. I'd love to hear the private conversations from both camps. Then there is Dean getting stronger every day. Surreal for us political junkies. It will sure be interesting to watch as things unfold. Otherwise, while the rats are trying to get game, W is just going to roll. Hehehehe...
