CU officials distance themselves from views of controversial professor (Ward Churchill)

BOULDER, Colo. -- The University of Colorado said Thursday a professor who compared the victims of the World Trade Center attacks to Nazis doesn't reflect the views of the school but that he has a right to express his opinion.

Also Thursday, a Colorado congressman called the comments "outrageous" and urged the professor, Ward Churchill, to resign while the brother of a man who died at the World Trade Center called Churchill a "nut case."

Churchill, chairman of the ethnic studies program at CU, has been invited to speak next month at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where news of his visit ignited protests.

Churchill did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

CU-Boulder interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano said Churchill's views don't represent the opinions of faculty, students or others affiliated with the university.

"While I may personally find his views offensive, I also must support his right as an American citizen to hold and express his views, no matter how repugnant, as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution," DiStefano said in a written statement.

In "Some People Push Back," a treatise written shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Churchill said the 3,000 people killed in the twin towers collapse weren't innocent victims. He said they worked for "the mighty engine of profit" but chose to ignore their role.

Churchill, an indigenous issues expert, also described the World Trade Center victims as "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who carried out Hitler's plan during World War II to exterminate Jews in Europe.

Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., called on Churchill to apologize.

Churchill, chairman of the ethnic studies program at CU

At least some good news....his insanity doesn't discredit any of the "real" departments at the school.....

[Churchill, chairman of the ethnic studies program at CU,...]

Is this one of those programs that increases racism and bigotry by promoting the "us" versus "them" mentality.

It's a sad case when slander is now considered freedom of speech.

I hope that professor Churchill takes no salary from the university or from his publications. After all, he wouldn't want to become part of that engine of profit and have some wacko compare him to a Nazi leader. They should publish this nut case's salary in all major newspapers and expose the hypocrisy.

It was also on Scarborough. Watch the repeat if you can. Joe and Pat Buchanan argue strongly that Churchill has a right to say these things, but no right to a taxpayer-funded position. Joe is asking people to send him emails about the situation. He is then going to bundle them and deliver to the Governor of Colorado.

I hope that's the correct email. It's off the top of my head.

in addition, cu-boulder has a football team with decades of sexual assault accusations, and a president betsy hoffmann, a board member of the target corporation that says the c-word is a term of endearment for women.
