President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so...

This is a no-brainer. If the Iraqi government asks us to withdraw our military, we will. That's what Bush said for years. They wan't us to stay for a while, though. The Iraqi people like us around. We told them we will leave when they get their things set up in their fashion a long time ago.

After the elections, political power will be held by the Shiites and the Kurds.

The Shiites and the Kurds can then:

A. Choose to allow the U.S. to give them military support as they defeat the Sunni thugs.

B. Ask the Americans to leave and so that the Sunni thugs can subjugate and slaughter the Shiites and the Kurds again.

We will probably we asked by a freely elected Iraqi government to leave. It is a popular position after all. Realistically though - it won't happen for another few years. Iraq's police and army are still not strong enough to defend the country, let alone protect its leadership. So they will look to us to help them out for just awhile longer.
