Your point has much merit and, it has to be said, the founders drew their inspiration from many sources including classical Greece. It would be foolish to try to deny the influence of Pericles in forming a democratic republic

I agree. This is why I object to the likes of Pat Buchanan or those on the extreme right who excuse the attacks from the Islamists due to OUR immorality.

Yes, our immorality sickens me. But the "morality" of Islam is just as insidious. It disgusts me all the more.

Western Civilization gave us honour, courage, chivalry, and suicide was evil - for whatever the purpose.

Indeed it IS a cult. Mohammed changed his beliefs too many times to count. He courted the Jews who wanted nothing to do with his warping of their religion. He had sex with his 9 year old bride. Sounds much like modern day cults.

Your argument is great and reminds me of the days of the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities. We have been brainwashed to be against the “witch hunt”, but fact is the FDR Administration and the one after held Communists in key posts. Let’s be clear. Conservatives were not appalled by the belief in Communism. They were appalled because these Communists were members of the Communist Party. They took orders from Moscow. Thus their affiliation went beyond mere belief to an activity that put the security of the United States in danger. They were vassals of the Soviet Empire using the power of the United States government.

Islamic organizations today that are actively working against the Constitution of the United States also do not deserve tolerance and are no longer under the protection of either freedom of religion or freedom of association.

You miss the point. Islam and nation are the same. There is not Christian nation. Meaning the religious beliefs of Islam are fused together with the policy of leadership in Islamic nations. Christians can wish violence on others all they want - but they do not have the power to carry it out without the power of the law against them. Islamists are given that power.

So now this is not a war of religions. But it is a war of cultures. Also Christian extremism is rarely held together in any organizational manner. Most Christian extremists are on their own. However extreme Islam is well organized and is so numerous to be terrifying. It took 21 men to kill 3000 people. There are 9 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

The President unfortunately has been tempered by the culture of political correctness. He needs to be firmer as to what we are up against. We are not up against a “handful” of evil people. We are up against thousands of terrorist organizers who have millions of willing recruits. What we see as senseless violence (Moscow school attacks) they see as successes because it increases their recruitment. It shows them that Russia, India and the United States are weak and don’t have it together to defend their peoples

I would normally, but I don't have all the links to that on hand. I have it saved as files from way back. Besides, some of the original links may be dead.

Oh, if it's any consolation... you have no idea how much I have here that I did not post. ;o)

Like all things, Western Culture is a combination. But it was the New Testament that laid the seeds of the idea of every individual possessing inherent dignity. Furthermore, it established that dignity was divinely bestowed and therefore irrevocable.

Non-christian cultures may have tinkered with the idea, and the Greeks certainly gave us the basis for a representative government, but almost all cultures prior to Christianity believed in a version of a caste system.

Monotheism generally believed that those who worshiped the chosen deity were special and chosen.

Christ was the first to say that all people are created equal and why that was so.

Thus we arrive at why Christianity is the true basis for western culture (summarized a bit with a few leaps tossed in for brevity).

Thanks for the ping, Broadsword...

"Perhaps I just don’t understand this whole PEACE thing. Did the definition of the word change, or is somebody just blowing a lot of smoke?"

You misspelled "piece" ;). Also, it's not the smoke you blow, but that which you inhale that helps in "greater understanding" of anyone who rapes and murders.
