I was wondering the same thing. Looking at the Rock Island County Court site and doing a people search I have looked up both Gregory and Kolb's public records. It seems he is charged with both Murder w/intent to kill and Murder w/probably intent to kill along with concealing a homicide. Kolb was originally only charged with Murder w/ intent but later Murder w/probably intent and concealing a homicide were added. It definitely leaves questions in my mind. My theory is one of 2 things...either they have charged them with 2 counts because Reynolds was pregnant or because they want the door open for some conviction even if they can't prove pre-meditation. I'm pretty sure that the second theory can't be because I believe each charge has to accompany a body but if the jury wants to convict of a lesser charge they have that right without that charge actually being filed. But even with that both murder charges are class M felonies. If anyone with law knowledge can chime in here that would be greatly appreciated.

Your second theory was the correct one. Two charges allows the prosecution to argue two theories. I finally found an article that explained why two counts of 1st degree murder were charged vs Kolb & Gregory. Here:
