Ford recalls 792,000 trucks, SUVs Cruise-control switches can cause engine fires

02:27 PM CST on Thursday, January 27, 2005

Bloomberg News

Ford Motor Co. recalled 792,000 light trucks from the 2000 and 2001 model years, including F-150 pickups and Expedition sport-utility vehicles, because a cruise-control switch can cause engine fires.

The action involves some 2000 F-150s, Expeditions and Navigator SUVs, as well as 2001 F-Series Supercrew pickups, the Dearborn, Michigan-based company said in a statement today. Ford plans to initially disconnect the switch and then ask vehicle owners to return when enough replacement parts are available.

I just heard one of the warnings from Ford on the radio: 'If you own one of these models don't park in or near a building'. No kidding.

As a matter of financial planning - I wonder what kind of reserves the manufacturer sets aside for this kind of expense - or is there such a thing as insurance to mitigate the hit of a recall?

Good question .. I have no idea. But maybe they built them so cheaply they have reserves for just this type of thing?

Probably something you could research on Google or maybe someone will come along with the answer.

Dang! Oh, wait...I don't own a Ford. Never have and never will. It's GM for me, every time. But, if I did own a Ford in this category, I'd park it outside for the time being.

That would be from the March 2004 issue of Car and Driver. The recall affects model year 2000 F-150s, Explorers and Expeditions, and early model year 2001 F-series Supercrew pickups.

Interesting. My '99 Explorer had a recall on the cruise control system soon after I bought it new. Maybe the Ford cruise control engineer was a Dem. Other than that and some minor things, my Ford is still going, now at 110,000 miles and doing great.
