The reason Democrats always won the governorship in Georgia despite the fact that Georgia is conservative and votes by large majorities for Republican Presidential candidates is because the dems won of course 95+% of the black vote and a much more sizable % of the rural white vote than would otherwise be expected. Probably based on historic tendencies of Southern whites to vote for Dems. What made the difference for Sonny was that he got a much larger share of the rural white vote. It is very likely that that was due to the flag. Therefore it is highly likely that the flag issue won Sonny the election. It is undeniable that it was at least a very important part of his victory if not decisive. He then turned right around and dissed those people. Because he cared more about how he and Georgia were perceived than he did doing the right thing. That is the act of a craven coward. Period. If he had insisted on a flag vote that included the '56 flag he would have gotten it. He was more than happy to let the House and Senate weasel out of it and then throw up his hands and say, "I did the best I could." So not only is he a coward, he is a liar. At least stand up like a man an admit you blinked when faced down by the Atlanta Chamber, the Coke, Home Depot and Delta axis, the PC gestapo, and the Black Caucus.

I wouldn't vote for that cowardly, scalawag if you put a gun to my head.

BTW, I do not exempt the House and Senate. After first voting for a real flag referendum, what would have been a historic, unprecedented role back of the forward march of PC, they blinked as well. But I actually agree with you that referendum can be problematic. That is why you largely don't hear me calling for a vote. I would prefer if the House and Senate would just do the right thing and reinstate the real flag, and Sonny should sign it and then have the decency and self respect to resign.
