We thought it was WAY cool to have a astronaut drive us to school,
You were right, is was. I'm jealous.

I'm with ya 100 %.. was a Lockheed cat,,, worked in the Tape Library, then in the sim room.. Night shift.
I had the opportunity to listen to and follow on with thew microfische transcripts of the crew tapes from the FIRE.
It was horrible.. no accounts to date come close

We went on a "VIP" tour, (connected with a cruise). Went through the "rocket garden" and saw the simulated Saturn launch. Awesome. I get chills now thinking of that simulation.

Thanks for the reminder, Valin. I lived on the fringes of Houston in Bellaire (well, it was the fringes back then!) when this happened. All the astronauts weren't just heroes they were OUR heroes so this hit all us kids very hard.
All the astronauts were a breed apart so I never believed the 'Grissom was incompetent' line. You couldn't get to be where they were on incompetence. You would have been cut.

From what I've read, that's what happened. Since they were on cabin life support, the fumes got into the life support system and into their suits. They died mercifully quick. The crew were not burned to death. They had varying degrees of first and second degree burns. Their suits protected them from third degree burns. Grissom, White and Chaffee were removed from Apollo 1 several hours after the fire. That was so the initial investigation team could review as much evidence as possible with the crew inside. I believe Grissom and Chaffee are buried in Arlington. White is buried at West Point. Still sad after 38 years. Tomorrow is the 19th anniversary of STS-51L Challenger. Next Tuesday is the second anniversary of STS-107 Columbia. A very sad week on the NASA calendar.

I saw the first Saturn V launch live. It was awsome. I was 125 miles away at the time...

Ah, OK, didn't realize you'd gone to the one in Clear Lake. Sounds like a nice way to see the sights on the cruise.
You had mentioned the Kennedy Space Center, which I believe is in Florida, and was wondering if they had a museum there, too. That's where they launch, I think. Johnson Space Center (Mission Control) is the one in Houston. I believe the museum is known as the Space Center Museum.

"the one in Clear Lake"
Nope. Didn't mean to be confusing. We took a cruise from Port Canaveral, and took a VIP tour of Kennedy after the cruise. It was all booked through the cruiseline though.

Well alright, then. LOL, why would I think that someone would want to take a cruise on Clear Lake itself! LOL
Thanks, good to know.
