Reagan pitch faces a bumpy ride

Lawmaker wants the state Capitol's circle drive named for 40th president

AUSTIN - Forget famous Texans and former Presidents Lyndon Baines Johnson and George H.W. Bush.

Make way for Ronald Reagan Circle at the Texas Capitol.

State Rep. Martha Wong, R-Houston, has filed a bill to rename the circle drive after the 40th U.S. president and former California governor, who died last year.

"After he died, when we saw his services on TV, it showed that both sides of the aisle respect him for what he stood for and what he did and how he brought America together," Wong said.

The drive, which runs around the Capitol between 11th and 15th streets, does not have a name. Wong said nothing in Austin bears Reagan's name, and she doesn't have the power to name an Austin city street.

Wong's bill has left other state representatives wondering.

"One of the things about the Capitol is that it has historically been a building that has been dedicated to Texans, past, present and future," said state Rep. Dawnna Dukes, D-Austin.

Dukes said the legislators have not named the circle before because they have tried to keep an open, nonpartisan government for everyone to enjoy.

State Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston, said she doesn't think the drive needs a name, but if it is going to be named, it should clearly be after someone from this state.

"Why Ronald Reagan? Why not a Texan?" Farrar said. "How about naming it after the first U.S. president from Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson? And isn't it time we started honoring strong Texas women like state Rep. Irma Rangel?"

Ronald Reagan Circle sounds okay to me and I plan to make a few calls to some officials in Austin and let them know it.

Please, Rep. Farrar, don't even mention those two names in the same sentence! {shudder!}

I don't like it. I named my daughter Reagan, so I you know I love Ron, but it needs to be reserved for a Texan or one who fought for Texas. How about George W. Bush circle, Crockett circle, Nimitz circle. If they want a more PC name it could be George Foreman circle.

I understand your point but IMO, Ronald Reagan was one of the greatest Presidents in our history. Naming the circle around the capitol after him would be the highest honor the state of Texas could give to memorialize his legacy.

I dearly loved the Gipper too, but I have to agree with you. The circle should be named for someone from Texas. Remember this is Texas.

LOL!

No, I was referring to that Texas lady *named* Ima Hogg, not the woman who acts like one!

I'd be happy to adopt Reagan as Texan - he had the right attitude, character, sense of humor, and looked great in a white cowboy hat.
