Schumer runs unopposed, but Hellary supposedly has not one, but two potential heavyweight opponents, either of whom would have easily beaten Chucky Cheese if they're such tough opposition for her. Sure.

Rudy and Jeanine Pirro don't want to be Senator. If they did, they'd have run against Schumer. They didn't. There wasn't even any talk. Now we're supposed to believe they're jumping at the chance to take on the smartest woman in the world and her MSM attack machine?

Forget the star power route and find a very solid candidate to go against her. Someone who won't make a debate gaffe and make it easier for the MSM to crown Hellary as the winner, something they did anyway, Lazio's stunt notwithstanding. Find someone whose campaign can work around the vaunted NYC press that all folded in 2000, someone who can appeal to upstate and make sure those western NY voters who went to Hellary don't do so again. And finally, put in place a system to make sure there is no voter fraud in NYC that some allege went on in 2000. Fraud that wasn't followed up on because the margin elsewhere obscured it.

Only don't try to tell us that the easier of the two NY Senators got a free pass back to Washington, but the stops will be pulled out for Hellary. Knocking off Schumer would have been a shot across her bow that the state is following the rest of the nation. Instead, it's a white flag that says she'll be unopposed when the stars decline.

You make some interesting points..however, IMHO there are some other issues that your comments didn't address. It was pathetic that the NY GOP didn't field a better candidate, and campaign, against Chuckie..but that is a function of how sad the party has become in the state under Pataki...also, at the time there was considerable expectation that Schumer would run for Governor in 2006, so they'd get another, and better chance at the seat in a few years.

Re Pirro...no way she makes the race. There is sooo much dirt on her husband..the family situation...it was pretty lcoal here, the trial..statewide, against Hillary, it'd be blown up a thousand times more..the campaign would be over in two weeks..

With all due respect, I don't think that there was a snowball's chance in hell of Jeanine Piro-or even Rudolph Giuliani, for that matter-beating Senator "Chucka" Schumer.

While they both would have put up much stiffer challenges to the incumbent than the sacrificial lamb, i.e. Assemblyman Mills, offered up by the state party in this past election, I don't think that you'd be able to crunch the numbers in such a way as to result in a theoretical Republican victory in those-purely hypothetical-matchups.

Republicans here in NY had two chances to beat Chucky Cheese; none and less than none. We're a Blue state, dominated by the 6-1 registration edge in NYC. But to be very honest Schumer is viewed as effective in his job. He is seen by many non Dems the way many Dems saw Al D'Amato, as a guy who cares about the neighborhood. Schumer's war against the President's nominees, his support for abortion rights don't carry much weight in NY. Hell even upstate NY gave Hillary good numbers when she ran against Lazio.(though he ran the worst senate campaign in the history of the Republic)

Chucky's seat is his till NY gets tired seeing his face on TV every day. Despite all the hoopla for Pirro, her only shot is Hillary declaring for 08 next year and declining to run for reelection. This is not as farfetched as it sounds. If she were to run behind her 2000 numbers it would work against her nomination. I really think she may stand down from the Senate and devote full time to 08.

Chuck Schumer has a 75% approval rating. He is a hard working Senator, back in his home district every single weekend. I disagree with him on almost all issues, but the guy is well liked, down to earth, with a real family in a real place. He was not beatable...that is why no one ran against him
Hillary, on the other hand is detested. She spent exactly 4 nights in her "home" in Chappaqua in 2003. She is a phony, and a polarizing figure.
Jeanine Pirro is dynamite. A Roman Catholic, pro-life, tough Law and Order Republican, she is super smart.Mayor Bloomberg hosted a $1000 a plate fund raiser for her at his NY home, and she has raised tons of money. She is articulate and knows how to go for the jugular. She can challenge Hillary in a way that a man could not.

Even if she lost, she would smoke Hillary out, forcing her even more to the left, taking positions against Jeanine's consistent Conservative record.
