Foreign secretary says Mexico may ask international courts to block Proposition 200

MEXICO CITY - Mexico may turn to international courts in an effort to block a new Arizona law limiting services to illegal immigrants, Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said Wednesday. He said in a radio interview that Mexico might take such a step after it has exhausted all possibilities under U.S. law to halt Proposition 200. "We are seeking all the legal opportunities that exist, first using the legal capacities of the United States itself and ... if that does not work, bringing it to international tribunals," Derbez said. advertisement He did not specify to which international bodies Mexico could appeal. Mexico's Foreign Department and lawmakers have repeatedly complained about Proposition 200, which voters approved in November. The measure requires proof of citizenship to vote and proof of immigration status to receive some government benefits. Derbez said the government already has made a verbal protest to the United States and now will file a written protest at the request of Mexican lawmakers. He did not say when it would be issued. He expressed regret that, according to polls, about 40 percent of Mexican-Americans in Arizona had supported the measure. "It's sad and it gives an idea of how we have to work to educate even our own Mexican-Americans about why it is important that these proposals are not accepted," Derbez said. In December, the Foreign Department issued a statement expressing "complete rejection" of the proposition, calling it "a measure that could generate actions of discrimination based on ethnic profile."

Perhaps the Mexican government should have considered "educating" these folks many years ago. Now, the US taxpayer is shouldered with the responsibility of doing so.

Much easier for Fox to send Mexico's unemployment and criminal problems to the United States than to fix them.

Excuse me, this is a sovereign country. Mexico needs to get a clue, and GW Bush needs to give them one.

Sarcasm, right? Mentioning Bush and sovereignty in the same sentence. LOLOLOLOLOLO!

Ah yes, Socialism 101. "We have to "reeducate" our own Mexican-AMERICANS." This SOB just can't believe that Mexican Americans feel the same way about illegals as we do. So, take heed all you Mexican Americans. IF Mexico has their way, you will be reprogrammed, i.e. they're going to give you some shock treatments until you get it right. LOL

As far as this clown going to the International Courts is concerned, we don't belong to the International Court. Or did they sneak it through like they did Specter?

Protection and Promotion of Worker Rights

-- Agreement fully meets the labor objectives set out by Congress in TPA. Labor obligations are part of the core text of the trade agreement.

-- Both parties reaffirm their obligations as members of the International Labor Organization (ILO), and shall strive to ensure that their domestic laws provide for labor standards consistent with internationally recognized labor principles. Agreement makes clear that it is inappropriate to weaken or reduce domestic labor protections to encourage trade or investment between the Parties.

-- Agreement requires that Australia and the United States effectively enforce their own domestic labor laws, and this obligation is enforceable through the Agreement's dispute settlement procedures.

-- Procedural guarantees in the Agreement will ensure that workers and employers will continue to have fair, equitable and transparent access to labor tribunals/courts.

-- Parties established a process for further cooperation on labor matters, including possible joint cooperative activities to advance common objectives and work on labor law and practice in the context of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

I think. because of the way it is worded, that even though the agreement was signed with Australia, a worker of any nationality can claim against the US if it doesn't follow the ILO standards mentioned in this agreement.

The WTO has a court, many other international organizations operate courts and tribunals that can affect the US because of the anti-sovereignty treaties ratified by congress and signed by presidents present and past.

I think quite a few eyeballs are in the stage of opening, perhaps they may even find the courage to remove their RNC blinders.

Now whether or not these people will be willing to admit the President, Congress and the Senate have been selling us down the river to the cheapest bidder remains to be seen.

Has the fact that a "trade agreement" operates as a treaty, ever been tested in the SCOTUS?

Excuse me, this is a sovereign country

I'm afraid you're living in the past, my friend.

Oh, BS. We are still a soverign country and this jerk can't do anything with his international court. We don't belong for one thing and for another they have no control over our federal laws or state laws or any of our laws. He can posture all he wants but it won't do the idiot any good. AZ will still have the law and the illegals will still be affected by it.

I thought the WTO was just a trade organization? I was also under the impression that President Bush has refused to sign the treaty with the world court? ` I think we are rapidly approaching the point where the citizens are going to have to get VERY LOUD to the traitors in our government to get their attention, if you know what I mean. This is TOTAL BS!

Mexico needs to get a clue, and GW Bush needs to give them one. Soon.

The Prez is actually giving them clues like it's going out of style. ...........clues that encourage Mexico's remaining criminal class to hurry up make their way across the border, that is.

This is pure insanity. The last thing we need is meddling by the world court, albeit our Supreme Court Judge Sandra has publicly stated that she follows world opinion and not our Constitution, thus violating her oath of office -- which should make her eligible for removal or impeachment.

For his refusal in helping keep Mexicans in Mexico, how many years do we subtract?
