AUSTIN Is she or isn't she?
Those anticipating a possible GOP fight for governor took notice Monday when Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn was quick to deny that she'd told a fellow Republican she's not running for re-election.
Strayhorn, who regularly lambastes Gov. Rick Perry, is seen as his potential challenger but hasn't announced.
The latest twist came after the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, quoting Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs on her interest in running for comptroller, reported:
"Strayhorn already has told Combs she is not running for comptroller again, so Combs' fund-raising efforts are directed at the job, she said. 'I will probably do a formal announcement in the next couple of months, but sure, I am telling people I am running,' Combs said."
A statement from Strayhorn spokesman Mark Sanders said, "The people of Texas are certainly asking (Strayhorn) to run for Governor, and she is listening. But the Comptroller never told Commissioner Combs she is not running for Comptroller again."
Combs campaign consultant Reggie Bashur said, "Commissioner Combs agrees with Comptroller Strayhorn that she did not tell her directly that she was not seeking re-election. The paraphrase in the newspaper is inaccurate."
Caller-Times Managing Editor Shane Fitzgerald said, "I'll certainly stand by my reporter's work."
Southern Methodist University political scientist Cal Jillson said it appears potential Perry challengers Strayhorn and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison are keeping their options open by not announcing.

Texas Strayhorn Ping!
If the race is between Perry, Strayhorn, and Kay Bailey Hutchison, Kay gets my vote today. Perry is acting more and more like a RINO and there is no way Strayhorn will ever get a vote from me.
Perry is pathetic. His crooked tollway deal is the worst I have ever seen.
Kay is pro-abortion and needs to get out of the Senate. She would do less harm as gov.
Why can't Dick Army run for Gov!?@? Now THAT's a Republican.
Either Dick Army or Tom DeLay. Don't you know the RATs would be on suicide watch if he was elected??
Travis Co. DA Ronnie Earle would have to leave Texas. Of course, that would be a good thing.
Delay is even better. That's who I was actually thinking about.
Strayhorn denies saying she's not running for re-electionAs mhking says .....
Just dam*!!!
Perry has a lot of baggage, but he did push through re-districting. Kay would score higher than Rick on the RINO scale (abortion, vote on the judicial nominee). We do, however, seem to agree on Strayhorn.
I say re-elect Perry to a special 2-year term and then bring back Dubya as guv.
Strayhorn reserved while heading in to hear Perry

Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who is mulling a challenge to Gov. Rick Perry, kept her remarks close to the vest today just before being seated for the governor's State of the State address.
"I'm delighted to be here," she said. "This is very important. This is the State of the State."
Asked if she would join in any standing ovations for the governor's remarks, she said simply: "I'm going to be very respectful."

He's too liberal for my tastes.
