2,000 new border agents aren't part of budget, Ridge says
President Bush (news - web sites) will not ask Congress for enough money to add 2,000 agents to patrol the nation's borders in his 2006 budget, even though he signed a bill last month authorizing the increase.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Monday that Bush's new budget, to be released in early February, will propose a "good incremental increase" in the number of agents. But he made it clear the number would not approach 2,000. The new agents were to be the first hires toward doubling the size of the force over five years.
As part of a sweeping intelligence bill passed in December, Congress called for nearly doubling the size of the Border Patrol by adding 10,000 agents over five years. The agency has about 11,000 agents; 90% work along the southern border with Mexico.
But in an interview with USA TODAY, Ridge scoffed at the notion of adding so many agents and said it would be an inefficient use of precious homeland security dollars.
"The notion that you're going to have 10,000 is sort of a fool's gold," Ridge said. "It's nice to say you're going to have 10,000 more Border Patrol agents in five years, but what other part of Homeland Security do you want to take the money from?"

That and so many other costs to the taxpayers to subsudize this "cheap" labor.
Revise that to the .........anyone else first president. Iraq, Mexico, Tsunami victims, etc. .....anyone but americans.
Sensenbrenner and the House members gotta push hard on this, make a lot of noise, get the the rest of the public aware of how they are getting screwed.
We don't need to hire any more government employees for border patrol. Just transfer those in the EPA, the Department of Education, DEA and a few more agencies to the borders and tell them what to do. Then make sure that they do it.

Does President Bush mean it when he says he wants an "immigration policy that helps match any willing employer with any willing employee"?
In a letter to the Los Angeles Times published this morning, Doug Ellice of Bethesda, Md., examines the implications of such a policy:
When people say, "match willing workers with willing employers, as long as American workers honestly cannot or do not want to fill the jobs," can they imagine how many people from other hemispheres might want to apply?
If anyone wants to hire hard-working poor people who, in addition, speak English, the Philippines can send 1 million or 2 million next Friday.
And if language is not required, Chinese workers can do to Mexican workers in our job market the same damage that Chinese manufacturers are doing to Mexican manufacturers in their respective factories.---snip
[T]he primary consideration as to how many guest workers might be admitted into the country appears to be the willingness of the employers and their foreign-born employees to match up the ability of the program "to fulfill the employers' needs."
As the President's position currently stands, that means that every new job created in America could be offered at minimum wage, and if no American can be found to accept the eroded wage, the job would be up for grabs to any foreign guest worker who's willing.

G_d help, GW, if another serious terrorist attack occurs within our borders AND illegals are some perps. GW's legacy will flush right down alongside Bill's, and GW could get an early retirement.
Sad, but true. Ignoring the borders will get many Americans killed. The terrorist cells are here, and growing by the week. We're soon going to pay a terrible price. And when it's discovered that they came through the Mexican border, the hue & cry from America will wash-out W's remaining presidency. IMO.
I'm wondering if anyone has heard about this, last night on the "ticker" on CNN:
"15 illeal immigrants from S.KOREA and man accused of trying to smuggle them across the US were arrested in New Mexico on NY bound Amtrak train"

Yes and no is the answer. Of course the folks on Medicare are getting the prescription plan but at the same time the healthcare providers (physicians and hospitals) are getting the fees cut for services provided. Too bad these healthcare professionals (especially hospitals) can't opt out of the Medicare program.

Sensenbrenner and Tancredo both said after the "promise" from the White HOuse to work with them on immigration that they felt it was a "hollow" promise.

Jorge Arbusto does not give flip about American border security, he just want to lower wages with illegal labor.
But there haven't been any attacks because President Bush has pursued an intelligent war to protect America from terrorists attacks from Iraq to shipping containers.
But do we hear any of the Bush haters praising him for his successful strategy?
All y'all are interested in is stopping Mexican laborers. You use terrorism as an excuse to seal the border just like the gun grabbers use terrorism to try to ban guns.
