"Shakespeare in Love" was a really entertaining movie and worthy of an Oscar. However, that year it won over "Saving Private Ryan" which was the joke. Even "Life is Beautiful" should have beat it out.
I have to admit, Fox was pretty good in Collateral. Way better than Cruise.
All that money (millions) spent on dresses, tux, jewels, hair, make-up. Oh and LIMOs. Shameful, all this conspicous consumption. How do they look in their many mirrors. Just beyond all reasonable and acceptable behavour.
You make a good case for these three categories. But for most people, best film, best actor/ress, best supporting actor/ress are the important categories.
The got pretty well everything else right. But the actors who played Jesus, Mary, and Mary Magdalene all did splendid jobs too.
And how about converted screenplay? The original was the gospels, but a splendid job was done converting them to the screen--compare it with all the other films that have been done about Jesus.
Finally, how about best film?
They gave the movie a foot in the door, but not much more.
The Oscars are a major part of American culture. Enjoy it!
Foriegn language films rarely get writing nomionations.
Why there are fabric less dresses to wear! How do the two go together?
Saving Private Ryan WAS nominated. And Spielberg won.
My longtime writers' group...half conservative, half Liberal...agree on one thing: they're nuts about Johnny Depp. Maybe this is his year. I don't go to movies, but have seen one or two early Depp films. He is talented, and the group thought he should have won last year for that pirate movie. Or did he? Oh, well.
Uh...because the award category has nothing to do with gate receipts...and it wasn't the best movie of the year?
Terry Teachout, whose judgment I respect, wrote admiring reviews of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sideways. With the warning that Sideways has a comic bedroom scene in it that some viewers may prefer to avoid.
I liked Shakespeare in Love, although I thought the bedroom scene was de trop and the final scene was saccharine. Otherwise it was a good picture, though not a great one.
Opps, you re right there... I mis spoke. I meant win. I really don't follow the Oscars that much. As you may be able to see.. I think they are a joke.
Tom Stoppard has spent a lot of his career deconsctructing Shakespeare (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead)and this was no exception. It was praised by English proffesors from top to bottom.
Duh! Because many people in Hollywood, especially many Jewish voters in the Academy, think the film is anti-Semetic.
The film was totally snubbed for the Independent Spirit Awards, given to recognize indie filmmaking by the IFP: www.ifp.org
I use to love them when they were fun. And I love to see the STARS. Now these actors are not REAL stars. They are all over the place doing disgusting things. Well I take that back on one. Nicole Kidman might fit the bill.
