Political polls, town hall meetings, dramatic interviews: The Iraqi elections will get intense American style coverage, even as security concerns mount for US broadcasters.
Beginning today, big name anchormen will report live in Baghdad and beyond-a full six days before the elections scheduled for Saturday.
In one of his last hurrahs before stepping down March 9 as 'CBS Evening News' anchorman, Dan Rather will head to what is described as 'The Triangle of Death'--30 miles south of Baghdad--to patrol with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
'The Marines will show Dan Rather how they are preparing for the election in an area known for shltering a large number of insurgents,' CBS said.
ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings will also report from Iraq beginning today. The network intends to post online voting results as they become available election day.
ABC has polled 1,300 Iraqis on their political persuasions and mobilized Iraqi reporters in 37 towns for additional input, in a joint project with Time Magazine and the British Broadcasting Corporation.
CNN plans coverage from polling sites in Iraq, as well as Syria, Jordan and even Dearborn, Michigan-- an urban stronghold of Iraqi Americans. On Thursday, anchorman Anderson Cooper arrives in Baghdad for special election coverage joined by correspondant Christiane Amanpour.
NBC plans to send anchorman Brian Williams to cover the elections, though details were not made public.
FOX News will send Shepard Smith to lead its team, with another four correspondants reporting from Baghdad and Tikrit.

Gunga Dan holding up the Marines. What lengths normal decent folk go to to accomodate our chattering class.
" Oh Lord, bless this , thy Holy Hand Grenade..that it might blow thine enemies to tiny bits, including unsavory anchorpersons..in thy mercy "

Hmmmm, what a way to go out in a blaze of glory. Is he putting himself in harms way to become some kind of martyr if he doesn't live through it????
The insurgents will probably think Gunga Dan is one of their own..old friends from the Afghanistan campaign of 1980
I think we should offer the "insurgents" a trade for any random arab truck driver they are holding hostage for Rather, Williams and Jennings. Three for one, and we still end up with the better bargain!!!
No doubt Gunga Dan will be reporting from behind enemy lines.
Rather's early exit polls in Iraq will declare Kerry the winner.
Watch your backs, boys.
I can just hear him now, "Bob, this election's got more twists and turns than the road from Mosul to Samarra." or, "Those Shiite's were beaten like a rented camel."
Yep, Dan is such an attention seeker, he's probably negotiating for a secret interview with Bin Laden. I'm serious....
I just hope Carter's not allowed anywhere near the voting booths.
I wonder if Dan will make a pilgrimage to a sacred spot to pay tribute to his deposed dictator.
Now the question is will the Islamokazis go after one of their own (Gunga Dan), or will his presence suddenly make the area that the 24th MEU patrols much more peaceful because they're afraid of taking out their #1 voice in America.
' And now, CBS's new expert Iraqi polling consultant, Former Minister of Information Baghdad Bob!'
Sorry Dan. You got your legacy. Hehehe.....
I still laugh when I think about Rather interviewing Saddam.
Pretty hard to miss the fact that they didn't tour the mass graves in Iraq....or anything for that matter. Rather was a temporary prisoner, physically and mentally. Idiot!!
Bovine feces! He'll be monitoring from the hotel bar.
