State records show increase in prison sex assaults

DALLAS -- Sexual assaults in state prisons are up sharply, with hundreds of inmates reporting that they were attacked by cellmates or corrections officers.

State records show the number of reported sexual assaults in Texas prisons has increased by 160 percent -- from 234 in 2000 to 609 in 2004.

The records show at least 129 Texas prisoners have alleged that they were raped or had sexual contact with corrections officers since 2000. Claims of inmate-on-inmate rape was even more frequent.

State officials said the increase in reported assaults resulted from their vigilance in punishing offenders.

However, inmate advocates said the problem is greater than the state figures show. They have begun a nationwide legal campaign against assaults and the complacency that they say allows them to flourish.

Oh well, do the crime do the time. Maybe the paroled inmates will remember this before committing another crime (that is, unless they enjoy forced homosexual encounters).

Yeah, remember that when the time comes that Christians are in prison for their beliefs/activities.

And thus we see the reason to learn martial arts.

You're disgusting. Rape, and the AIDS death sentence that often comes with it, have no place in our prison system, if we are a nation of laws and a decent people. You think these people never come out of prison? You think they'll have any more humanity when they come out than you are displaying now?

In Pakistan, savage barbarian tribes sentence people to be raped. It's pathetic that your sense of justice is no more developed.

Oh well, no one innocent in there.

And no one who's going to finish serving a sentence and return to the streets.

And no one who has repented and converted to Christianity.

No worries. Just good, clean, raping fun. The real problem is that most people are just so uptight about rape. Obviously, you've managed to overcome that.

Nietzsche said laughter was schadenfreude on a clear conscience (enjoying other peoples' pain without feeling bad about it).

It's been going on since prisons were built. I abhor the fact that it happens, but it does.

I'm not 'for' rape. When did I say that?

Your first post seemed to accept it at the very least.

This should not be happening in our prisons. Those in jail deserve to be protected, as we're not allowing them to protect themselves.

The fact that non-violent prisoners have to endure torture does no one any good. The fact that society looks the other way while rapists are allowed to go wild is absolutely silly because nearly all of these inmates are released back into the fold.

Take away the video games, TVs, telephones and weight rooms - stop the rape culture.

Some are forced and some are not. Either way, it is kind of disgusting.

It happens, that's all. I agree that it shouldn't be, but it does.

This is enough to keep me scared straight. I am way too man-pretty to go to jail. :)

I agree with that sentiment, but not the implied notion that prison assault is ok. Predators should be put in supermax facilities. Or, if they are completely unable to co-exist with other people, they should be executed.

Sexual assault in prison is unacceptable.

Well of course this is awful but whose fault is it? The guards can only do so much if you allow these prisoners to mingle and exercise etc. IMO this is an barometer of the overall scum level of people entering prison. If you do prison looks like you are in for a hard time.

While serving your time in prison you should not be subjected to crimes being committed upon yourself.

They are born that way. Don't you know that homosexuality is something people are born with!!! They can't help themselves!

There is not one iota of scientific evidence that supports that statement. There are, however, MANY cases of men who were gay but now are not. "Born that way"... you cant really believe that garbage do you? I guess the male population of the Greek peninsula "used" to be born with some sort of gay gene, which they have since abandoned for the hetero gene. NO! Its a choice, and a damned one at that.
