Holocaust memorial opens in Paris

A stone wall engraved with the names of 76,000 Jews who were deported from France to Nazi death camps during World War II has been unveiled in Paris. The "Wall of Names" memorial is located at the entrance to the French capital's newly renovated Holocaust museum.

Some 11,000 of those deported from 1942 to 1944 were children. Nearly all were killed - mostly at Auschwitz in Poland.

French President Jacques Chirac will officially open the site on Tuesday, before flying to Auschwitz.

Mr Chirac will be one of many world leaders present at ceremonies to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp.

'Prayer to the dead'

More than 2,000 Holocaust survivors and relatives of victims attended the inauguration ceremony in Paris' central Marais district.

They also took part in reading out a prayer to the dead.

The new site is an expansion of two institutions - the Memorial to the Unknown Jewish Martyr and the Centre for Contemporary Jewish Documentation.

"[The Memorial] will help in teaching a story that continues to haunt our everyday life," said its president Eric de Rothschild.

It took two years for several researchers to compile the list, drawing on Nazi secret police records and also Jewish archives.

"This wall keeps our innermost secrets in its stone and delivers them to those who pass," said France's former Health Minister Simone Veil, herself an Auschwitz survivor.

When the memorial officially opens on Tuesday, visitors will also be able to visit the basement crypt where ashes of some of the death camps' victims are kept.

"When we travelled around France in Oct/Nov 2002 it was the first time we encountered UNSOLICITED insults about America. Paris was the exception... I don't believe we encountered one single political comment in our two weeks there. But out in the countryside, it was different. People went out of their way to come over and tell us they didn't like our president or our policies. This happened on the street, in restaurants, and elsewhere when people heard my Americanized French.

Same thing happened to me when I lived in Italy in 2002/2003 except it wasn't the Italians, it was French I would find myself sitting next to in the restaurants in Rome. Often, when I would order my 'cafe Americano' they would say something disgusting and then move to another table as if sitting next to an American was going to spoil their food. That's when I decided to forego Paris. I never said a word to them but they sure spoke volumes of anti-American hate to me both with their words and their actions.

I am FRENCH FOR BUSH and I do agree with you!
I don't trust at all CHIRAC whose government and specialy the new Foreign minister is trying to come back in the diplomatic game after BUSH reelection and as elections are coming next in IRAK.
They don't want to recognize that they were wrong but hope to make business with the new irakian government...
I was on the Champs Elysée in Paris at the finish of "Tour de France"(a great bicycle race)for the victory of Lance Armstrong for the sixth time and i was holding a USA flag.A young man i didn't know asked me if i saw the film of propaganda by M.Moore.I answered it was only propaganda, that
i heard and red about it and didn't want to see it...

Seems like a french ambassy on this thread!
My opinion is that CHIRAC is dangerous. He is not a good allie for USA and for the free world. He is most likely the allie of CHINA,and "muslims countries"!
During his last stay in CHINA he asked to stop weapons embargo for CHINA,he told chinese he considered US culture as a poor culture(but he forgot our culture is nearly the same!)
I think Mr. CHIRAC is not very intelligent but very pretentious(as was De GAULLE who was the first to have diplomatic relations with the CHINA of MAO)

Oh so now the French are responsible for Germany Nazi atrocities?

Re-read what I wrote. That's not what I said.

As for France despising Jews, I think all countries have their equivalents of the Klu Klux Klan

Only in Europe they call it "the citiznery".

Ehm, excuse me, but are you saying that the Germans and French of today are the same like their ancestors? I mean, are you responsible for bad treatment of slaves?

No, but then again, I don't loathe blacks. Germans, the French, and the rest of Europe still loathe the Jews. Nothing really changes.

Please describe anytime that France has shown ties with China? Also for the record France has been stamping out Islamic fundamentalism and imperialism and terrorism by the same in Africa and at home, for decades prior to the USA becoming involved, so much for your comments. Spoofed to you by the left wing media

Only a fool, left wing peace nick or Islamic terrorist sympathiser would want to promote a divided Europe and USA agenda. There can be no possible reason otherwise to want terrorist in the European countries to target the USA in safety. Like I say most French want and sympathasise with GW Bush and the USA against terrorism, we may have differing opinions on the execution of this strategy and what it will take that is all. We have idiots in our country also spoon-fed their daily vocabulary by OUR left wing press. I just hope that the real patriots on both sides of the Atlantic can overcome these "little" people and small thinkers and understand that President Bush's agenda is the same as the wishes of the French people. Solidarity and a belief in the ideals of democracy will overcome the Islamic tide, NOT isolationism. Divide and conquer and other cowardly devices are the weapons of the enemy. Be smarter in your choices and refuse to be spoon fed your thoughts by a hard copy hungry media at work on both shores of the Atlantic, God Bless America and Vivre Le France.

So which one describes Chirac and Schroeder, as they've made it pretty clear that their agenda is to divide Europe and the US. And to a lesser extent, divide Western Europe from Eastern Europe.

Did I say I supported those leaders? According to latest opinion polls in Europe, most French and Germans agree with me

For the record as much as I despise Chirac for being weak against a foreign aggressor and threat, I cannot agree that he is dividing Europe and USA. The division is a result of actions on both sides subsequently, Chirac disagrees with USA policy for sure but divisive? That is media talking again not common sense. Chirac is a peacenick we have those in the USA also. Nothing new there, or nothing a new election will not fix, many many many many people in France want him gone the Jean-Marie Le Pen fiasco was evidence of that.......

"Ah, when pushed we see the true anti-American feelings come out." There is no anti American sentiment in me, my daughter is American and her father a former Marine. I love America but hate the dispute and absurdity of the current EU and USA relationship.

Exactly. We believe in fighting terrorism; France doesn't. That's division. Division is good in this case. I don't want to be united with France just for the sake of unity.

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!! France has been fighting Islamic expansion and terrorism for decades. Just because we have a peacenik leadership at the moment, and one that believes the fight is better made elsewhere, does not mean that is representational of the opinions of the French people.

I do not think anyone would go along with that. The need for unity is required in driving out the fundamentalist Islamic disease from the west and preventing another 9/11 from happening anywhere in America, Europe, Australia etc. Our lives and the lives of our children depend on that unity. next time could involve more serious escalations like nuclear weapons, biological agents etc.

The terrorists know that they are not safe in the USA, nor are their funds so they stage their operations in Europe, because both Europe and the USA are not cooperating. Let's just give them our countries on a plate instead and save time.
