'Hook 'em, 'horns' gesture lost in translation Associated Press
OSLO, Norway President Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.
That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.
"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.
For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.
Bush, a former Texas governor, and his family made the sign to greet the Longhorn marching band as it passed during the inaugural parade through Washington during Thursday's festivities, Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, explained to its readers.
And I did the same thing during Ozzy (and other) concerts during the '80s.
It's rather more akin to halloween than a profession of belief in anything.
I wonder if they are fans of Megas XLR...
I'd wager that the Longhorns will be around long after the last European metal-head goes to Valhalla.
I thought it was sign for "bull".
Illuminati Devil Hand Signals Prevalent Throughout Inauguration
The first image Represents the horned god of witchcraft. Pan or Cernunnos. Note the thumb under the fingers and given by the right hand. The next image is a sign of recognition between those in the Occult. When pointed at someone it is meant to place a curse. Note the thumb over the fingers and given by the left hand.
They may not know Aggie hand signs, but the women are beautiful over there in Norwegia.
No, bull would use a different hand shape & movement & location. Sometimes that sign is used in the context of BS (most), other times in the context of S. Either way it's a bad word & not a sign a deaf person of good repute would use...
What do the Europeans care about religion?
Actually, that IS the sign of the Devil in sign language, but it is a regionalism first and foremost in the hearts and minds of the Bush clan, I'm sure.
Doesn't 'Hook em Horns' symbol mean 'Hang Loose' in Hawaii?
Hahah,,it may not take many years. heck in a few weeks some of our homegrown loonies will declare Bush is part of a satanic cult.
Isn't BS with the back of the hand facing outward?
No. You do point it to the target of the intended sign, though, such as your friend, or your TV, or whatever. But that is true for almost all signs in that category...
Your descriptions are good to know. We should pass this on the Condi Rice so she can give some curses to Boxer.
Sorry I meant to clarify--YES, you see it with the back of the hand a lot, but that doesn't really matter since almost all signs will change the location of the hands depending on the context and subject.
So basically Bush is a Satan worshiping Christian Crusader???
And now, with their unfortunate headline, The Houston Chronicle ensures that some Americans will believe the president was giving a Satanic symbol as well.
Satan and the main figure in Christianity are the same for these people.
I have no doubt some whacko will allege that,,hey, we have whackos in this country who allege all kinds of thing. They will say he is posing as a Christian to advance his satanic cult activities.
I don't think I've ever seen BS with the hand palm-outward, honestly. I never formally studied sign language, but 5 years at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology), three on deaf-hearing floors in the dorms (sorry - "residence halls") gave me a pretty good feel for a portion of the language.
Thanks for the clarification.
