It is different.

"I'm sorry, I can't dance with you. My wife would break my jaw!"

"I'm sorry, I can't dance with you. My husband would break my jaw!"

One of those is mildly amusing. The other is distinctly creepy.

I'm not really sure the exact point you're trying to make Scott. Let me say this. I've been in situations where the female wanted to mix it up. If I'd have lifted a finger to stop it or respond I'd have been the bad guy. Folks can laugh this off all they want, it's an exremely stressful situation for the guy to be in. I was not physically injured in the situations that I was involved in. When it was over, I was a total nervous wreck internally. Externally I looked like it didn't bother me at all.

Violence from either individual in a relationship is WRONG. It's dead wrong. If the woman goads the guy into responding, guess who's the bad guy no matter what. She could have wailed on him for hours. Once punch back and he's in jail.

If you guys haven't been involved in this, take it form someone who has. It's a very bad situation to be in. And if you have children in the home, it's very difficult to cut and run, knowing women get the custody in the vast number of cases.
