Hallelujah! After 44 years one of America's most famous convicts, a black man named Wilbert Rideau convicted of murdering a white woman in Louisiana during the Jim Crow era, is free. Headlines worldwide proclaim justice has been done. But they couldn't be more wrong. Justice is weeping. For Rideau remains what he was when I knew him 17 years ago - a cold blooded murderer.
Three different juries convicted Rideau, now 62, of murder. But all were overturned on technicalities, providing Rideau an incredible fourth chance. This time he was convicted only of manslaughter, downgrading his sentence to a maximum of 21 years and thereby freeing him. But here are the uncontested facts of the case.
In 1961 Rideau robbed a St. Charles, Louisiana bank using a gun he'd purchased the day before along with a buck knife. He ordered three employees into his car and drove them to a bayou. There he emptied his gun into them a point blank range, hitting two in the neck and a third in the arm. One escaped into the water; one feigned death. The third, Julia Ferguson, made the mistake (according to others) of begging for her life. Rideau drew his knife and plunged it into her heart, killing her.

He's a standup guy but Bush is a criminal. More "liberal" logic.
Do I smell Johnny Cochran?
Oops, make that: liberal "logic".
Unbelievable!
He was on his defense team.
Every convict was scum who deserved to be there.
'"I was 19 years old," he said at trial. "It was ill-conceived. It was dumb."'
Not to mention cold-hearted, despicable, and just plain evil.
I suppose Mumia will be the next "victim" to be paroled. >:(
Celebrity justice...
I wonder what kind of technicalities could have effected a trial of a black man in Louisiana back in the 1960's?
Sounds like it's right out of the Dem Election Playbook - Keep counting until the 'Correct' outcome is obtained irrespective of the facts or truth of the matter. It was on full display in both this instance and in the recent Wash. Governors election.
You know the answer to that but whatever, the truth was, and he admitted it, he killed those people in cold blood committing a felony. He should have never walked free.
If you don't execute them, they get to murder again. Always remember that.
However, having a Justice System that would deny blacks seats on juries and deny a black defendant the right to a fair trial is a far greater injustice than murder.
The man has served more than 40 years and yes he is scum and the Lord will have greater retribution for him than earth can provide. Now Louisiana has to pay for their sins and we can all pray that this old man does not kill again.
"...Well, the test will be to see how long he remains alive after they kick him out..."
Americans have very short, media-bite attention spans. Surviving family and friends directly involved at the time are now in their mid-sixties or older. As a society, we need to improve our "collective memories" about these kind of atrocities. This dirtbag is trying to blame an attempted triple homicide on "youthful" idiocy?
This horrible person will live out the rest of his years in relative peace, unlike his victims.

If he does kill again, odds are he will kill a Democrat.
Sad, but true....
