We'll take BC, but only if we get AB too.

Not a chance

They don't want us and we don't want them. If anything they can have Seattle and we will throw in New England.

*PING*!

Hasn't BC voted Conservative for the past 5 years or so?

Hmm -- maybe we could do a mass migration so they would become like Alaska. It wouldn't take too many people. Do they have oil?

Yeah, that group is always ripe for a trade. And I don't think most of the residents would even mind (I live in Boston and I think they'd be happier being a part of almost ANY other country.)

But it's so beautiful. I say we give the lefties there a full 72 hours to get out of town. (They hate Americans anyway....so they should want to flee.) Then we welcome them in as the 51st state. What could we call it? None of those Indian names that are lovely, but no one can pronounce. Better stick with something regional (albeit English) like Hope, Princeton, Stewart, or Hudson.

Oh yes, without the political leftists, the "sexually flexible," enviros, vegans, and God-haters....it would qualify as the most beautiful state in the U.S.

You make the best point on this thread, that the Canadians of B.C., as well as those in Alberta and Saskachewan pay the bills that are run up in Ottawa. There is no way that the revenue-addicted leftists in Parliament will simply turn a western province or two loose without some form of compensation that would be financially crippling to all parties involved (think reparations a la Versailles post World War I). Keep working hard, Westerners, the shiftless socialists in the East need your tax dollars to pay for their boondoggles. Your benevelent government will let you know when you can take a break (heh heh).

Actually, if I remember correctly, the attempt to secede by Quebec? (one of the eastern provinces) made seceding from Canada rather easy. I believe it requires a party to have 50k members and that their province votes to secede? I'd have to look into it more before I can say what the requirements are.

Um, BC hasn't had a Conservative Premier (Governor) in years. They've only elected NDP kooks and Liberal kooks to that position.

Hmmmm. Don't think it'll ever happen, but.....a re-education process might show some promise. Let's say 10 years or so as a US territory, to see how it works out. I think that the prosperity brought on by a move like this might help turn the tide against the liberal monolith there.....political winds can shift quickly in a parlimentary system so ya never know.

but it ain't happening any time soon, and that's good because if it did my mother-in-law could visit without going through customs and that would be bad....... ;^)

All this talk about having BC and/or Alberta secede from Canada and join the U.S. is nonsense. One of the national magazines in Canada did a poll a couple of years ago on this question, and they came up with some very interesting results. Alberta was determined to be the province that resented the Canadian government more than any other, but it was also determined to be the province least likely to become a U.S. state.

The reason for this is actually quite simple . . . Albertans aren't stupid, and they realize that answering to a Federal government in Washington D.C. would be far worse than answering to a Federal government in Ottawa.

I'm sure they have lots of untapped resources. As for a mass-migration, I don't know about that. I doubt they'd have an infrastructure in place to handle that many people (as it is, there's only 91,000 people in Nunavut, the NWT and Yukon combined in an area of 1.5 million square miles, well over 3 times the area of Alaska, and AK has 5 times as many people with half of them living in Anchorage). It's so isolated and dreadfully cold most of the time that only the hardiest of individuals would want to stay there.

There's a lot of things in Canada, but trash ain't one of them. Didn't you know there is a death penalty for littering up there, eh ?

Okay, thanks for the word. Looks like we're back to the Alberta/Saskatchewan proposal. Not sure I like the chances of getting THIS issue on the GOP's agenda, though!!

How about a trade? BC for all of New England. (Think of all the RATs and RINOs we'd lose!)

I while back, I read that there was a study during the Reagan era about what to do if Quebec left Canada and Canada started to fall apart. Their conclusion was that we'd only want BC and Alberta and that the rest would be a liability.

I don't really think that if Alberta was able to seceed they would then join the U.S. They have such a healthy economy and reports suggests that they would be able to have a healthy economy on their own. Gas/Oil prices in Alberta would likely be extremely low since they would likely be relying on them as their chief export.
