The President, First Lady and their parents relaxed at the White House today. Former President GHW Bush visited the press corps on duty in the WH press briefing room.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: This week, Washington has been marked by pomp and circumstance. In a free nation, these ceremonies are more than pageantry. They underscore that public office is a public trust. America's elected leaders derive their authority from the consent of the American people, whom we serve. This is a high privilege, and that privilege carries a serious responsibility: to confront problems now, instead of passing them on to future generations.
As long as I hold this office, I promise that I will serve all Americans and will work to promote the unity of our great nation. And working together, we will secure the blessings of liberty, not only for ourselves, but for generations of Americans to come.

ON THE PRESIDENT'S CALENDAR: Although the President's calendar is not announced due to security reasons, whenever possible, the Saturday Dose will attempt to inform you of upcoming activities.
- The President will attend the annual Republican Congressional Retreat this week.
- The Senate is scheduled to vote on the nominees for Secretary of State and Attorney General, Condi Rice and Alberto Gonzalez. (The Dims are planning to make waves about both votes.)
- The President will be closely monitoring events in Iraq leading up to the Jan. 30 elections. These elections are just a first step on the Iraqi road to a fully functioning democratic form of government. The first step is to elect a representative parliamentary body which will be charged with drafting the nation's constitution.
- The President will be preparing for the State of the Union speech, which is coming up on Feb. 2.
- Later in February, the President travels to Europe for what the media will describe as a post-inaugural "fence-mending" visit, but which had been planned months ago.

Saturday, Jan. 22 photos: GHWB visiting the WH press corps. He has been permitting himself some well-deserved nostalgia this week, and he took a walk around the WH and its grounds today.

Although we've already seen many images from the Inaugural, including many similar to the following pics, these all come from new White House and other photo essays. They may give us a slightly fresh perspective on the events of the wonderful week just past.
The extended Bush and Welch families, photo taken in the East Room of the White House, Jan. 19, 2005. (There isn't a larger photo on the WH website, unfortunately, because it's hard to see everyone.)

The "Hook 'em" horns of the University of Texas Longhorns apparently got some Europeans all a-twitter because they thought the gesture meant "devil horns."

Speaking of dolts who got all a-twitter, some TV nattering nabob of negativity actually had the gall to say that, "the Secret Service is going to
have to rethink" the use of all the emergency vehicles and heavy security presence when escorting the president and his party back to the White House after the inaugural. The dimwit whined that it made us look like a "banana republic." (Don't remember for, but think it was Jonathan Alter.)
As for me, I LOVE watching all the security. The Secret Service facinates me. The President's lead agent is shown to his right in this photo. I happened to catch a bit of the orders he gave other agents. At the point when the limo stopped to let the first couple out for their walk down Pennsylvania Avenue, he checked where everyone was before signaling that it was OK to open the car doors. He called over to the President's 2nd lead agent (the one the President rescued in Chile), "Stay with me! Stay with me!" The 2nd agent gave a crisp military-like response, "Yes sir!"
Three cheers for the Secret Service!

President Bush dances with Army Spc. Jazmin Azcona of Queens, N.Y., and First Lady Laura Bush dances with Marine Lance Cpl. Richard Devon Hansen of Washington, D.C., during inaugural festivities at the Commander-In-Chief Ball. Both military dancing partners are decorated veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The young woman appeared shy and overwhelmed.

This one was on yesterday's Dose, but it doesn't hurt to repeat it here, because it's a lovely photo of two high school sweethearts who are still very much in love in their 60's.

Thanks for the pics. It's great to see how much our W seems to be enjoying the festivities this time, isn't it? And his parents, as well! As everyone has already said, Laura becomes more beautiful each day. What a wonderful First Family we have!

President Bush and the First Lady dance at the Texas/Wyoming Ball at the Washington Convention Center.
Vice President Dick Cheney finishes a dance with his wife, Lynne, as former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson and his wife, Ann, enjoy her style at the Texas/Wyoming ball. The Vice President is a pretty good dancer. He had actually just finished twirling his wife around in a lovely dance step as this photo was snapped.
