... D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey said he is proud of the way his officers performed, but some believe police may have overused pepper spray.
"It was handled well, a major success," Ramsey said. "Even though there was a lot of tension between some groups of people, everyone should have left feeling they had their opinions able to be expressed."
Ramsey said D.C. police made 79 arrests Thursday. Many of the arrests came after the inauguration, when violence erupted on Columbia Road in Adams Morgan Thursday night.
"It was a group of anarchists that decided to break out windows and spray-paint buildings and all that sort of foolishness, and we had to make an arrest there," Ramsey said.
More than 70 people were taken into custody in that incident, and one officer was hurt.
A man who said he was an innocent bystander said he was detained and was forced down upon his knees for 20 minutes. He told News4 the group was sprayed with pepper spray for no reason....

"A" in circle = "A" in hole = @$$hole!
IIRC, Adams Morgan is a highly ehtnic and gay area, with quite a few African Muslims. Why attack them?
Spoiled suburbean kids in jail tend to wind up with a "red A".
Why not? The protesters are anarchists.
"some believe police may have overused pepper spray"
The Red scumbags ought to cosider themselves lucky the cops UNDER-used BULLETS!
Spray painting buildings and smashing windows and things.
Boy, that makes a political statement doesn't it.
On the bright side, we can bet at least a few of the victims who's property was damaged which they will probably have to pay for themselves to repair, were lefties.
Those crazy DC Chapter Freepers!!
Are you implying they are completely irrational? Well, perhaps you have a point.....
Hey! We were all safely indoors dancing to the Capital Offense!
Just kidding! :o) I hope you all had a great time!
They should consider spraying them down with soap and water. I hear they are nasty looking and probably could use a good bath. Possibly a flea dip.
RepubMommy posted her report of her interactions with the anarchists at:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1325941/posts
Part of her story: "All of a sudden these Anarchists came out of nowhere and started throwing iceballs at us and were swinging clubs. Somebody in the crowd yelled that they had tear gas. They attacked a Protest Warrior and my friend that was with me heard they attacked a female officer as well. The crowd was getting nervous and started pushing away from them. Some poor lady had two small kids next to me and she was so scared she just kept saying, "Please God make this be over." I thought, "Great, I was going to die right there, not by the hands of extremist terrorists, but by my own fellow Americans". Anyway, cops in full riot gear showed up and seperated the crowd and we just so happened to be on the right side of the street, or else we were not going through the checkpoint anymore."
Me too!I can tell you each time during the last 4 days my daughter myself and my granddaughter (in town from Texas) asked for information we got great help from D.C's finest I think the District cops are great. Now the fact was the police were a little distracted by the Inauguration but remember that Southern Hospitality!
