Because the conservatives want to stay out of the world as much as possible. They don't believe it's our job and they don't believe in grand missions. IMHO they are mistaken. If over the next decade just N Korea, Iran and China were to become more democratic, the world would be an immensely safer place. Bush has not proposed doing anything extreme to get there.

I agree. Isolation worked in the days of conventional threats, from conventional adversaries, with conventional weapons. Those were the good old days, and too many conservatives are still stuck there.

If you saw the movie, "Lord Of The Rings,", you might recall the very first words; "The world has changed."

It changed for all of us, including the President. The threat is no longer remote, even if our enemies are, and we need to deal with it wherever it exists. This speech outlined the most comprehensive response to that threat that I have heard, and merely criticising the speech without offering a better solution is quibbling.

I understand the dangers of war and can even understand opposition, but it is absolutely essential for the world to move towards constitutional, secular democracy.

It's just amazing to hear liberals oppose efforts to bring democracy to the world.

good point - the other is that WFB is a polished wordsmith who loves the "choice " of words more than the content. He makes points about the way teh words are used not their intention. High School debate points off/
