AUSTIN - The Harris County Republican Party, along with some other county parties in Texas, is laying aside the traditional Lincoln Day Dinner this year to hold a Reagan Day Dinner in honor of former President Reagan, who died last year.
For decades, a dinner honoring President Lincoln has been a midwinter feature of local Republican parties across the United States. In the late 1990s, some local parties started calling their fund-raising soirees the Lincoln/Reagan Day Dinner.
The trend has accelerated since Reagan's death last year, and some Texas counties have changed the names of their events next month to Reagan Day Dinner.
Harris County GOP Chairman Jared Woodfill said a resolution to rename the local dinner passed unanimously at an executive committee meeting in December.
"It's more of an opportunity to honor President Reagan in light of his recent passing. Probably, what you'll see happen next year is the name go to Lincoln/Reagan Day Dinner," Woodfill said.
Woodfill said the dinner previously was meant to honor Lincoln's role in founding the GOP.
"Lincoln being a former Whig and then becoming a Republican and then the first Republican president ever elected, we look at him as the founder of the Republican Party," he said.
After the Reagan Day resolution passed, Woodfill said, some local Republicans worried there would be confusion about whether there are two dinners or that Lincoln might not be getting his due.

Reagan Day ping!
...so he thinks.
150 years from now, some wacko will write a book saying Reagan was gay.
Go Reagan
Ronald Reagan was born and raised in Illinois. The Land of Lincoln.
LOL! I bet it'll be quite a book if they do! Right now the gays HATE Reagan because he didn't recognize their movement and didn't jump on their demands to donate billions of dollars to AIDS research. They'll invent a way to do it though. My guess on what their claim will be: Reagan had to have carried the so-called "gay gene" followed by a photo of Ron Jr.
Well, you have to admit that he had homosexual traits--like breathing.
</sarcasm>
Why in the world should Lincoln have to yield to Reagan? They both deserve a national holiday.
He also got out of there and headed west away from yankeeland. It's funny though that the "Party of Lincoln" doesn't win in Illinois anymore. The Republican Party still wins in Texas, but as you can see from this resolution and the ones being adopted all over our state, it isn't the "Party of Lincoln" here anymore!
but he was a Californian all the way..........see, some good stuff can come out of here........LOL.......
In this case its a simple matter of modernizing the Republican Party. It's also a way of reminding its elected officials of their conservative roots in Reagan at a time that the country clubbers and big government types are on the rise in our ranks. The GOP today needs to live up to is image as the "Party of Reagan" before we get another "Party of Nelson Rockefeller" movement going.
Lincoln already has a national holiday on Presidents Day (picked for him and Washington) and adding Reagan to it would be proper.
breathe? I thought they mostly just gagged.....
and that he owned slaves (/Futurama reference)
Whereas, President Ronald Wilson Reagan redefined the Republican Party as a vessel of common sense conservatism, moral responsibility, respect for liberty, and opposition to the wasteful tyranny of an excessive federal government,
Whereas, Reagan's 1980 election breathed new life into the Republican Party, thus ensuring its continuous and successful emergence in Texas and the nation.
Whereas, to Ronald Reagan's credit and as a direct result of his presidency, freedom now reigns supreme for hundreds of millions of people who were once condemned to a life of misery and oppression under the boot heals of communism and other failed socialist ideologies propagated both then and now by the forces of the radical left.
Whereas, Ronald Reagan's legacy of traditional American values, respect for human life, opposition to the tyranny of centralized government both domestic and foreign, and his pursuit of liberty and freedom against oppressors, despots, scoundrels, thieves, and liberals of all form should and will endear him to Americans as the greatest president of the 20th century and to the world as a leader for all time.
And whereas, Ronald Reagan, though he has now passed from his earthly existence and into the next, provides a legacy worthy of our continual remembrance and celebration,
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED THAT the Republican Party of Harris County, of the State of Texas, hereby officially renames its primary annual commemorative celebration, as presently held on or about the months of February and March of each year, will henceforth and in perpetuity be known as the "Ronald Reagan Day Dinner and Celebration."
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Republican Party of Harris County, of the State of Texas, will publicly announce the said renaming by the 30th day of its formal adoption under the bylaws of The Harris County Republican Party's Executive Committee.
Adopted by the HCRP Executive Committee on December 6, 2004
And went to California...
Doesn't win much in California, either.
...but as you can see from this resolution and the ones being adopted all over our state, it isn't the "Party of Lincoln" here anymore!
Not surprising. Denying heritage is very much a southron trait.
Nah. Lincoln never had any desirable heritage in Texas. He was never our President, Texas having been outside of his control for the entirity of his term and until after his assassination. He was also hated by virtually all of Texas' founding fathers who were still alive at that time including Sam Houston, David Burnet, and Jose Antonio Navarro. He also opposed our admission into the United States, sided with Santa Anna when the Mexicans tried to invade us after annexation, and believed Texas should cede her territory south of the Nueces River to Mexico. It's only proper that Texas honor somebody else who we actually liked, who actually liked us, and who we voted for twice.
Sons of Illinois day? Wait, isn't Chicago in Ill? Hard to believe that Dem county central also shares home base with the Land of Reagan and Lincoln. That's America.
They'll say that Reagan hated gays, which will prove that Reagan was homophobic, which will prove that he was himself a repressed homosexual.
