Russia slams U.S. for accusing Syria of terror ties
By Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondent, and Reuters

Russia criticized the United States on Friday for accusing Syria of having ties to terrorism, saying such an approach would harm security in the Middle East. "It's well known that slapping labels on countries and unilaterally describing certain states as part of the 'axis of evil' has not improved anyone's security," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told Interfax news agency.

"Syria is one of the key players in the region and resumption of talks with Israel on the Syrian question is important in the context of the Middle East peace process," Yakovenko said ahead of a visit to Moscow by Syrian President Bashar Assad next week.

U.S. Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice has warned Syria it faces new sanctions because of its suspected interference in Iraq and ties to terrorism.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday that Israel is opposed to having Moscow supply advanced SA-18 shoulder missiles to Syria.

In the first conversation between the leaders in months, Sharon said the missile deal endangered Israel's security and the leadership of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen).

Israel is concerned that the missiles will find their way from Syria to Hezbollah, putting Israel Air Force planes and even civilian aircraft at risk.

Sharon told Putin that Syria and Hezbollah were encouraging terror against Israeli targets, both in Lebanon and by means of Palestinian terror organizations. He said Syria and Hezbollah are the main challenges facing the new Palestinian government.

Putin did not respond to Sharon's plea, sources said, though Moscow has previously denied plans to sell anti-aircraft missiles to Damascus.

Russia and the United States are already at odds over Moscow's nuclear cooperation with Iran, accused by Washington of seeking to acquire illegal atomic arms.

Washington sees Syria as a sponsor of terrorism and has demanded that Damascus stop insurgents and money from entering Iraq ahead of this month's elections. Syria denies this.

ROFL - right, Hamas has their office on main street in Damascus but Syria has no terrorist ties - Putin is an idiot. The day Syria installs Russian missiles Damascus will soon thereafter be utterly and totally destroyed, probably by Israel - hopefully sooner rather than later...

Lets not forget that last year they had miliary exercises with Japan and S.Korea and then later with us and the UK off the Chinese coast. Or that China got the middle finger on a major oil pipe line that now goes to port for Japan and S.Korea.

"saying such an approach would harm security in the Middle East."

When asked about how Russia's missile sale to Syria would harm security in the Middle East, Putin condemned Chechen rebels, then took a call from Hugo Chavez.

We see the Prophecy of Ezkiel taking form.

THE RISE OF RUSSIA

Ezekiel 38:2,4,8 "Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords.

After many days you will be summoned; in the latter years you will come into the land that is restored from the sword, whose inhabitants have been gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel which had been a continual waste; but its people were brought out from the nations, and they are living securely, all of them."

In order for some end time events to occur Russia will have to be a strong nation with a strong military.

Russia created the Jihad when it armed and trained insurgents to destabilize the West's hold in the oil rich sands of the Middle East prior to the first Gulf War. To this day, the Jihad is fueled by Russian and Chinese weapons and because of this I think Islam rides a Red Horse.

Rev 6:3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

Rev 6:4 And there went out another horse [that was] red: and [power] was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

The great sword is the Nuclear Weapons that Islam could not build in a million years, even if they had blueprints. France supplied the weapons grade Uranium, Russia supplied the reactors to create the Plutonium and China and North Korea supplied the missile and warhead technology. The Islamics were GIVEN the "great sword".

We certainly live in interesting times...

to the mountains of Israel

And the mountains of Israel will have to become a political point of contention. (Currently called "The West Bank".)

Oops, too late...

Well in any case, the "don't-give/sell-weapons-to-terrorist-sponsering-states-ers" (such as me) say that Russia's statements and behavior in this regard are reprehensible, and need to be punished somehow.

Bodansky refered to the concept of a "Trans-Asian Axis" inclusive of the Terror Belt and the PRC. So, does this mean that Russia is joining up with, or, at very least, instigating, the Axis (of Evil)?

Isreal should have known that the Russians are not and will not be their friends. Israel got used to train the Russkie special forces on anti-terrorism and now their two month usefulness to the Russians has ended.

"Russia isn't supporting terrorism, far from it. It's all business. Syria is a valued and lucrative client who buys things with cash. That's all it is. Russia is assuming that Syrian terrorists won't target Russian interests. They could be wrong."

Yes, good point. We in the US supported Bin-Laden in Afghanistan against the Russians in the 80's. Look how well that worked out for us. Same thing with Saddam in the early 80's against Iran. To me, Russia has a lot more to lose long-term by making buddy buddy with China and helping arm them. For now, the Russians are cash-hungry and sell to anyone.

Actually, the CIA helped train Bin-Laden and the Jihadists in the 80's. We used them as a convenient tool and made the mistake that they would be thankful for not allowing the bear to conquer Afghanistan.

As far as interesting times, well yes it is. The good news about Revelations is that the beast and this massive army that goes to war against Israel is beaten back and destroyed. The bad guys lose but the war is going to be awful. Fix your eyes on God and not focus on the fear.

"I think the people of Ukraine proved that no outside influence or authoritarian government can forever hold down the will of the people...and that is what scares would-be dictators everywhere."

i have read a number of places that signifigant financial support came from the west, both before and after the election, to the support of the opposition candidate.

The real issue is will china risk a war with a nuclear power over the 'nothern resource area,' given that so far their leadership has demonstrated a clear appreciation of MAD.

If you assume they won't, then russia shud be selling as much as they can to them, and getting as much penetration into what will become the greatest market in the world.

I think Putin only wants to recreate the "greater" Russia that existed before Reagan pulled the wings off of it. I don't think he wants a nuclear war but he does want the glory of Russia restored, in the same way that France pines for the glory of France. Neither will go to the wall in opposing the US but they will try to stir the pot wherever they see an advantage. In other words they will remain a nuisance and a pain in the ass but will not pose a direct threat to the US as China might be inclined to do.
