I cannot believe that a non-liberal would bash this speech. Perhaps she is just not comfortable with God herself. She surely need not be embarrassed for the President, he can handle himself. As for the ending; isn't it accepted that America was founded under God to spread freedom and liberty, both religious and economic? Ms Noonan did us a disservice her by giving fuel to the anti-American, anti-religious zealots in our country.

Sour grapes there, Peggy? Afraid of losing your place in the Speech writing hall of fame? PO'd because W didn't ask you? I find Ms. Noonan's criticisms suspect. For heavens sake Andrew Sullivan liked it. Chrissy Matthews liked it. Sounds like jealousy to me.

Peggy doesn't get it here. Bush now has nothing to lose. The "real" Bush will emerge more and more, and this man is . . . A CHRISTIAN!!! Deal with it Peggy.

You are right, my friend. Though she may not be a Lib, she IS a patronizing, holier than thou Elitist.(a Rarity, I grant you, but perhaps a RINO in Patriot's clothing?)

This writing is the complete opposite of what she had to say right after the speech.

Tooo many have a problem with the "Creator".

Quick word count FWIW:

freedom - 27
liberty - 15
God - 3
soul - 3
Creator - 0

Re: Way Too Much God

Comment:
Peggy, I admire you very much. I think you are without peer in writing skills. I am not a religious zealot, but I think you are way off base in your criticism of GW's speech. I think Bush's pledge to end tyranny in the world was a grand gesture. I think freedom deserves such a pledge from those who enjoy such an existance. We are retired military which may explain our fervent patriotism and desire to spread freedom. My husband served two tours in Vietnam which may explain our knowledge that there can never be "way too much God" in a speech or in life. We will continue to appreciate you.

I actually liked the transcendent rhetoric myself, but it would've been nice to have some practical realism in the form of how many divisions will be added to the military in order to actually achieve the soaring objectives..

Why do people fear GOD so much? Could it be that something in ones life is not right?

Just a thought.

"Way Too Much God"

When your creation, existence and everything that you have is a gift from God, then how can there be too much?

Those of us who have experienced dictatorships in our lives, and were once desperate in our frustration to get rid of it, not only welcome President Bush's eloquent words, but applaud them as an overdue decision by the strongest nation on earth! The theory was first heard by me through words expressed by Ms. Rice at her senate committee hearings earlier in the week, and I thought this was a wonderful idea! While it was once very difficult to intervene in other nations' internal affairs, the world today is a different ball game and little thugs (like Fidel Castro, Hussein, the North Korean drunkard whose name I've forgotten, the idiotic silk-clad clerics in Iran, etc.) have become few and isolated little criminals that this country should be able to blow away with a little snort!

I like Peggy a lot and have bought several of her books. But she's wrong here and I'm disappointed she's given the Lefties some talking points.
