I cannot believe that a non-liberal would bash this speech. Perhaps she is just not comfortable with God herself. She surely need not be embarrassed for the President, he can handle himself. As for the ending; isn't it accepted that America was founded under God to spread freedom and liberty, both religious and economic? Ms Noonan did us a disservice her by giving fuel to the anti-American, anti-religious zealots in our country.

Maybe she feels snubbed by the Bush admin...who knows, but she needs to get it together.

I know...
now on the Inaugruation thread, some guy is taking one sentence out of the speech out of context and saying the President wants communism or something....

The ACLU must have dropped a load into its pants after hearing President Bush's address yesterday... and Michael Newdow's glass jaw dropped off his mugly face.

Sour grapes there, Peggy? Afraid of losing your place in the Speech writing hall of fame? PO'd because W didn't ask you? I find Ms. Noonan's criticisms suspect. For heavens sake Andrew Sullivan liked it. Chrissy Matthews liked it. Sounds like jealousy to me.

I don't think anyone ought to get their knickers iin a know because Peg didn't like the speech. I understood her point and while disagreeing with it, this was not a malicious review nor was it extreme. She has a point and any of the "realists" might agree with her. This was an idealistic speech and I am surprised so many are taking it concretely. I don't think GWB promised to extend freedom in the next four years and make a utopia. I think he was thinking long range and as a posture rather than an action. But that is just me, I interpreted it in a nuanced way. But Peggy didn't. Otherwise she loves GWB just like us.

Peggy doesn't get it here. Bush now has nothing to lose. The "real" Bush will emerge more and more, and this man is . . . A CHRISTIAN!!! Deal with it Peggy.

The speech was eerily reminiscent of JFK's notorious "fight any foe, bear any burden" inaugural address; the busybody Wilsonian sentiments voiced in that speech got us into Vietnam--and, indirectly--into our present situation. Some places simply CAN'T be democratized (the Arab World, Sub saharan Africa come to mind); their cultures won't allow it, for all they understand and respect is rule by a strong man, a chieftain. This explains a whole line of bloody autocrats in these parts of the world, from Shaka Zulu to Idi Amin to Robert Mugabe; from the Saudi Royal Family to Nasser and Hafez Assad to Saddam Hussein. Trying to teach democracy to an Arab or an African is like trying to teach a rooster to sing like a canary.
Wow a DU Troll's dream statement if I ever saw one. Go take your elitism over to DU with you please.
