Peggy Noonan: Way Too Much God
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 21, 2005 | Peggy Noonan

Was the president's speech a case of "mission inebriation"?

It was an interesting Inauguration Day. Washington had warmed up, the swift storm of the previous day had passed, the sky was overcast but the air wasn't painful in a wind-chill way, and the capital was full of men in cowboy hats and women in long furs. In fact, the night of the inaugural balls became known this year as The Night of the Long Furs.

Laura Bush's beauty has grown more obvious; she was chic in shades of white, and smiled warmly. The Bush daughters looked exactly as they are, beautiful and young. A well-behaved city was on its best behavior, everyone from cops to doormen to journalists eager to help visitors in any way.

For me there was some unexpected merriness. In my hotel the night before the inauguration, all the guests were evacuated at 1:45 in the morning. There were fire alarms and flashing lights on each floor, and a public address system instructed us to take the stairs, not the elevators. Hundreds of people wound up outside in the slush, eventually gathering inside the lobby, waiting to find out what next.

The staff--kindly, clucking--tried to figure out if the fire existed and, if so, where it was. Hundreds of inaugural revelers wound up observing each other. Over there on the couch was Warren Buffet in bright blue pajamas and a white hotel robe. James Baker was in trench coat and throat scarf. I remembered my keys and eyeglasses but walked out without my shoes. After a while the "all clear" came,

"I did not discern she had disliked the speech at the time. I thought she said she was stunned. Evidently she was "stunned" by the "over the top" aspect she perceives."

Yes, I agree with your description. I take issue with Peggy being so 'materialistic' about who's who she was in company with and being so overwhelmed with too much 'God' as though this was a new thing.

Thanks, I had a phone call right as Peggy said she had to 'think about it'.

I agree. While there are varying degrees of 'for sale', at the end of the day these people need to get in print/facetime in the media. I think there's also still a bit of 'the new boss... not the same as the old boss' going on here, in Peggy's case.

I heard Joe Lieberman praising the speech this morning!

I honestly interpreted the speech as the Bush Doctrine writ large and I think Peggy doesn't get it.

I'm still mulling over her charge that they were "defensive" about the choice of music. That is one odd charge to make, IMO.

Me, too. It's just not as recognizable. I say keep playing it and it will catch on!

Gosh, I posted during the one song that I loved it and it was like a prayer and it turned out it was co-written by Hatch.

I actually enjoyed all of the music.

And whether one liked the music or not, to arrive at "defensive" as Noonan does is entering bizarro world, IMO.

Well, first of all the committee chose the music, and the committee was headed by Trent Lott. I liked some of the music but not all of it. At any rate, why stick the music criticism in there, when she has to know that the President didn't choose it?

It is very easy to understand the meaning of that sentence if your faith is strong. It means that no man or woman can do it alone. That we need each other to survive. As Ben Franklin stated, we must all stand together or we will all hang separately. In a global sense, it means - listen up France, Germany, and Spain! You may think you are free now and have liberty but your freedom and liberty depends on us as well as your neighbors. That's what it means, Charlie Brown!

Well said! Even Charlie Brown gets it, I'm sure! ha!

"As I said before, this isn't the first time she has written something like this. I need to search back and see if I can find the last one which also ticked me off."

Agree, last one that comes to mind is her being in England and flowers.

why should I care what she thinks?

Well, FR is about, in part, discussing the opinions and commentary from pundits and politicians and Noonan is in that sphere and wields influence.

I'm sorry...what is your point? (Don't worry, I do get it and you're so very wrong...I get the idea you make a habit of such)

I and others watched the speech and formed our OWN opinions. We are now commenting on one that differs. We are not, to your chagrin, saying "I was wrong and Peggy is right!".

LOL

So take your idiotic and insulting monkey image and shove it.

The little plots of flowers column and this one just ooze with smarmy arrogance. Her affected sense of self-importance conveyed in her on-camera persona and writing is grating. Frankly, she's tiresome.

BTW, Laura Ingraham just gave her props to Noonan. Yuck!

Got that right. Noonan is getting trashed for speaking her mind... nevermind her track record. So begins the conservative splintering...

So let's get this straight: The President gives an inaugural speech and Noonan opines, criticizing it.

We criticize Noonan's criticism and THEN you swoop in on your broom to declare that further discussion is off limits and to do so is to begin "conservative splintering"?

Talk about lack of logic and rational thought. How offensive and stupid all at once.

Peggy wrote nary a line of this speech, tho she wanted to do the whole thing.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

I believe she thought she'd be thrown this plum after taking an unpaid leave of absence to help on the Bush campaign.

Now...Bush has a gifted writer after him!

Better throw her a bone...quick!

Yep, that's one of them. There was another one as well, but I can't remember the name. It was critical of Bush's reading and spekaing skills.
