CORE: Byrd's Condi Delay is 'Racist'
NewsMax ^ | 1/20/05 | Carl Limbacher

The Congress of Racial Equality blasted Sen. Robert Byrd on Thursday for holding up full Senate confirmation for Secretary of State-nominee Condoleezza Rice, denouncing the former Ku Klux Klansman as an unreconstructed "racist."

"It's not surprising," CORE spokesman Niger Innis told NewsMax. "Byrd was a racist 50 years ago under the guise of leading the Dixiecrats and he's a non-reformed Dixiecrat today." Innis said the only difference between the Robert Byrd of the 1950s and now is, "He's got black colleagues in the House and the Senate who apologize for him."

The Senate had been poised to confirm Dr. Rice on Thursday when Byrd and Sen. Barbara Boxer threatened to extend debate and force a postponement, CNN reported Thursday morning.

With that, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid asked the Republican Majority for nine hours of debate on Rice's nomination, now scheduled for Tuesday.

Innis also shed some light on a report Tuesday that White House political guru Karl Rove was a no show at CORE's annual Martin Luther King Day dinner in New York, where he was slated to be the guest of honor.

"We got a communication that he would not be able to make it earlier in the day," Innis told NewsMax, as he was preparing for Thursday night's inaugural festivities in Washington, D.C. "There was some type of emergency and we were told that in advance of the dinner. So it's not like he completely didn't show."

CORE, the Heritage Foundation and the American Conservative Union, as well as several other groups, sponsored the inaugural ball held at the City Museum of Washington.

"We are very pleased to be part of a coalition that, I think under normal circumstances, people would say are strange bedfellows - but are actually not so strange anymore," Innis said.

In regards to Senator Byrd: You can take the boy out of the Klan, but you can't take the Klan out of the boy.

Robert "Sheets" Byrd is a racist? I thought he was in the Klan because he looked good in white. Who'd a thunk it?

I have a feeling the days being a Democrat could excuse racism is passing away. Reid got justly hit for his comments about Thomas. Perhaps not the furor that would erupt for a Republican, but more than we are accustomed. When pelosi has to jump to Byrd's defense rather than allow the outrage to die naturally, time's are changing.

Yup, and seeing the race card played against the party that over-played that hand for so long is kind of its own just reward.

Puting them in the position of defending themsleves every time they make an attack is a tremendous stragety. If they want to play hard ball, they have to play on our diamond.

The Senate had been poised to confirm Dr. Rice on Thursday when Byrd and Sen. Barbara Boxer threatened to extend debate and force a postponement, CNN reported Thursday morning.

Why don't they make these backward, obstructionist racists actually continue the "debate". Of course this isn't supposed to be a debate, but why pass up the chance to let Byrd and Boxer opening up their mouths. Each time they open their traps the dims lose thousands of members.

Biden's final comments were, in two words, incoherent and strange.

Byrd is a reaKKKtionary DemoKKKrat.

This is news to me. The early news stories made it sound as if it were all Reid's idea.

These "nine hours of debate" are merely for the purpose of allowing some Democrats the opportunity to make speeches which are intended to wow the rubes back home. By which I mean the rubes that voted for them.

Right on, CORE!!!!
Of course, the MSM will ignore this, and I know better than to hold my breath waiting for Jesse Jackson to come to Condi's defense...;)

Because of the Democrats' antics, Colin Powell will go to Ukraine to represent the U.S. at the inauguration of Viktor Yushchenko, rather than Condi Rice...despite the fact that she would be a very appropriate person to go since her academic background was in Soviet studies. I'm sure Powell will do a fine job, but Condi's presence would have been a great way to begin her tenure as Secretary of State.

This, too:
"There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much." - Robert "Sheets" Byrd, 2001
