She was heaping praise upon the speech this afternoon, as was Bill Kristol. Her 'grating' comment tonight to Hannity stopped me in my tracks.

Ms. Noonan's got some 'splaining to do---.

I'm thinking they don't like the Bushes because they don't hobnob with Hollywood Celebs. There was an non-stop stream of 'hip' Hollywood types in DC when x42 was President, and Sally Quinn and her friends got to meet and socialize with them. Since Pres. Bush could care less about celebrities, or throwing parties the media types in DC don't get to rub elbows with the glitterati anymore and they don't like that.

Thank you for the explanation. That's pretty disappointing. Perhaps Peggy missed how over the top the so called civilized world has become.

Re - socializing and eating out.

First, the President likes to go to Camp David or his ranch, to give the folks in the White House the weekend off. If he stays in town, as Clinton did most of the time, the White House staff has to stay.

Second, Dubya is aware of how much prep it takes the SS to go out to eat or to parties in DC. If it's a public restaurant, the SS has this rule that everybody has to stay, once the Presidential party has arrived. So, they are "frozen" in place until the First party is ready to leave. Dubya is aware of this inconvenience. He's also aware of the extra SS detail required to eat out, or to socialize in DC. It takes more - to stand outside, others to constantly scope the neighborhood, etc. This makes them work in the evening or on weekends, taking them away from their families. He is very aware of how rough the campaigning was on the Secret Service detail - the amount of time they were required to be away from DC and their families. This is a very considerate President - having watched all of this from the position of son of a President, and he made some decisions based on that experience when he became President.

Third, he really doesn't like the DC crowd. The President does on occasion stay in DC, but he has his friends in to stay at the WH and entertains them there. He has retained his friends - people who knew him before he became President and people that he trusts.

The DC crowd is just so jealous that they don't get to rub elbows with the President and his wife at social events, and that they don't get their names in the newspaper's social pages as having held a party that had the President as an attendee. It's a social climber thing, dontcha know.

So, the President chooses to be genuine, considerate, entertain his own personal friends, and it makes the DC crowd really, really jealous to be so excluded.

I say, "tough" - and that's our Cowboy President.

They should be used to it by now but I suppose we are going to have to hear them carping for four more years. Tee hee.

Michael Gerson (sp) wrote the speech. He's been Bush's speechwriter from the time he came to DC. Karen Hughes was on tv talking about the speech today. The President and Gerson started working on it on Nov. 3rd! The one the President gave was the 22nd draft of the speech.

Jenna looks fabulous in the green dress. :)

Yes she does. Barbra is such a beauty. Her dress does nothing for her though.

Hi, Truthie. The president is into spending real time with family and quietly at the ranch or Camp David instead of that phonybaloney social crap in the DC scene.

The President giving his mother a kiss on the cheek. That was the most touching moment of the day.

Wow .. color me shocked! Peggy Noonan's latest here

Way Too Much God - Was the president's speech a case of "mission inebriation?"

Excerpt: "The inaugural address itself was startling. It left me with a bad feeling, and reluctant dislike. Rhetorically, it veered from high-class boilerplate to strong and simple sentences, but it was not pedestrian. George W. Bush's second inaugural will no doubt prove historic because it carried a punch, asserting an agenda so sweeping that an observer quipped that by the end he would not have been surprised if the president had announced we were going to colonize Mars."

What's happened to our Peggy??

"Peggy Noonan's done a 180....she loved the speech this afternoon."

She still does. These people are upset so to speak because she thought the speech seemed to promise a bit more than can be delivered... than is realistic. Not much of a critque from my view.

I think so too. And Barbara (daughter) was always at her grandmothers side (Lauras mom) holding her arm and assisting her.....very sweet and thoughtful.

Did anyone hear the catty remark from CeCe on Fox when Jenna was putting on lip gloss during the parade? Something about Laura having to admonish her? Laura was smiling. And is applying lip gloss or protectant forbidden in public? It wasn't like she was putting on mascara.....

"Ending tyranny in the world? Well that's an ambition, and if you're going to have an ambition it might as well be a big one. But this declaration, which is not wrong by any means, seemed to me to land somewhere between dreamy and disturbing. Tyranny is a very bad thing and quite wicked, but one doesn't expect we're going to eradicate it any time soon. Again, this is not heaven, it's earth."

Miss Noonan needs to have a few of her own speech-written words shoved back in her face, IMHO. I'd do it but I've long ago given away her book, which is largely irrelevant on this day, as is she.

I heard Peggy's "grating" comment and changed channels.

Earlier today on FNC with Brit, she wasn't really able to grasp the speech and looks like she still hasn't. Wonder if she's read it yet?

So many others have expressed amazement at the breadth and depth and import of this speech - methinks the lady might be protecting her own legacy a tad much. What IS up with her?

"What IS up with her?"

If you want my honest opinion, I think she's ruined herself today. A pity.

Jrabbit, I've also noticed that twin Barbara is ALWAYS sensitively, patiently attentive to her grandmother--even when it puts herself in the dust behind her peers, and if she were anyone else, impatience or a trumping desire to be with others, might easily cause her to drop the ball, so to speak. I guess I focus on Barbara because, as I mentioned, she's hauntingly similar in looks and movement to my daughter, except that mine has blonde hair. And my daughter, like Barbara, is a very caring, perceptive-to-the-needs-of-others (one of her BEST qualities...especially to her elders) and bright and quiet.

And "The Cece" can blow it our her rearex, as she is NOTHING but envious of the Bush twins--I've heard it in her voice a few times--even though she tries like HECK to disguise it. Fueling into her belittling of the twins is the fact that "The Cece" has become FRUMPY before her time, and I think that she's sour due to it. And moreover, being the liberal that she is, she, I guess, just can't "hep" it. Oh CeCe, make improves your life and your joy in it, or BUZZ OFF about your envied.

I think every FReeper is having a good time tonight except the designated curmudgeon.

I'm relying on FR to keep me informed. Can't watch what I want because we're staying at a relative's house at the moment. The pics of the President and First Lady are awesome! So were the pics of George H.W. Bush and Barbara, and also the Cheneys :)

I would like to comment on the dresses. Laura looks magnificent as always, but the girls? Jenna should have been wearing Barbara's dress(well I don't want to post exactly why she should), and no one should have been wearing Jenna's dress. Imo, it's ugly. The color would have suited Barbara, however...and again, imo.

I don't mean to be a pain, but I was really disappointed in Jenna and Barbara's dresses.

All there is to be seen is Condi's dress. I know she's going to look great.

"I don't mean to be a pain, but I was really disappointed in Jenna and Barbara's dresses."

I don't see it as you being a pain, BUT, bear in mind (if you haven't...I'm a mom of a daugher in college,) that at that age, young women are VERY particular in what they'll wear (in their awarenes and weight of others' perspectives,) and their tastes at that age being more "this is what I will wear, and this is what I WILL NOT," it's tougher to impose others' opinions on choices in dress with them than with ANY other women's age group. I just know this from experience....I think given what I just wrote (which is of course IMNSHO) the twins looked absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Tasteful and proper.
