Cheney voices concern that Israel may attack Iran

Vice President Dick Cheney voiced concern Thursday that Israel may decide to act first against Iran to eliminate the possibility of a nuclear threat.
"If, in fact, the Israelis became convinced the Iranians had significant nuclear capability, given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objective is the destruction of Israel, the Israelis might well decide to act first, and let the rest of the world worry about cleaning up the diplomatic mess afterwards," Cheney said in an interview aired on MSNBC on the day that George W. Bush was sworn into office for his second term as president.
"You look around the world at potential trouble spots, Iran is right at the top of the list," Cheney said
It is not a good idea to shoot at aircraft while they are refueling from your own aerial tankers.

I think that Israel does have the capability to do it - they have long-range fighter-bombers, and they also have more than enough bunker-busters. I'm sure that they also have excellent intelligence - better than ours on the human level, though less so from the technical standpoint, so they know where to drop packages.
However, in order to get to Iran, the IAF almost has to pass over Iraq. This means that we will know about it, and everyone in the world knows this. Despite Cheney's statement basically saying that Israel has the right to take a big hunk out of the mullah's collective asses, we can't very well say "Oh, did the IAF pass over territory we controlled? Damn, we had all our radars down for a software patch from Microsoft, and none of our planes were up, either, since all of the pilots had hangnails last night. Gee, what're the odds?" As such, the US will bear as much blame as Israel....
...which means that we either do it ourselves, or we do it in a joint op with Israel. I think that we're going to do it ourselves, right AFTER the 1/30 election in Iraq is over.
Why should this surprise anyone, let alone the Iranians ? They've announced their intentions to the world and their nukes are no longer a secret. Who could blame Israel for defending herself ?

There were anecdotal reports that this happened. There were reports of Israelis used planes with Iranian markings in the Iran Iraq war. I tended to doubt them at the time.

No, one nuke in Tel Aviv would be the end of Iran.
It would be the end of Israel, since every Arab country that could would be sending planes and troops to attack those that survived. Knowing this, the Israeli leaders will not only put a crater full of radioactive slag, surrounded by a large glass parking lot, into every major Iranian population center, but the same will happen to EVERY major Arab population center.
I would also expect that the Aswan High Dam will be nuked, leaving a very large amount of radioactive water to flow rapidly down the Nile and into the Mediterranean. The Saudi and other Persian Gulf oil fields will also be attacked, possibly with Cobalt-60 encased bombs (which make it really "inconvenient" to visit an area for quite a number of decades). One wonders if Europe - especially Germany and France - and the states comprising the old Soviet Empire will be untouched.
You see, "Never Again!" isn't a complete thought. The complete thought is "Never again, but if again, then not for free." If Israel goes down, then the 10 plagues are going to look like a match next to a bonfire, and the recent tsunami will seem like someone got splashed by a glassfull of water. Hundreds of millions will die, and the collapse of the world economy and the starvation, disease and wars resulting therefrom will kill billions.
I think that Bush and Cheney know this, as have all American leaders since the '73 war. As such, while we may complain sometimes about Israeli actions, we won't allow Israel to either go down conventionally or be nuked - because we CAN'T afford to allow it. This is why, besides protecting ourselves and our direct interests, I believe the US will be stepping on the toes of a few mullahs within a few weeks (though definitely after the Iraqi elections).
I'm remembering Osirak, and thinking "hope".
