Security Cabinet decides to give Abbas a chance

Israel will renew security ties with the PA a week after they were cut off, the National Security Cabinet decided Wednesday evening.

Throughout the day, close associates of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas met with senior Israeli officials in Jerusalem to request cooperation, Army Radio reported.

Defense Minister Mofaz agreed to a Palestinian request to allow senior IDF officials from the Southern Command to meet with Palestinian security officials in order to present and coordinate security steps the Palestinians are planning to take in the Gaza Strip. Gaza Division Commander Brig.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi met with Palestinian security head, Musa Arafat.

The decision to allow the renewal of talks between security officials was approved despite Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's decision to postpone meetings with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas until the latter succeeds in restoring calm to the area and halting terror.

The Cabinet decided against a widespread IDF operation in Gaza and will give the new PA administration a chance to stop the escalation. However, the Cabinet also agreed to launch a military operation should talks fail.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday night, "In light of the severe events which have been reviewed and on the basis of security establishment recommendations, the Cabinet approves the security establishment recommendations regarding alternative courses of action and response by the IDF and the security forces in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, as they were presented to the Cabinet.

The Cabinet instructs the security establishment to prepare forthwith to carry out all of the approved alternatives. Due to operational considerations the alternative that is chosen and the timing of its implementation will be determined by the decision of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Vice Premier Shimon Peres, Industry, Trade and Employment Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz.

In an interview with Channel 1 Wednesday night, Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz denied that the decision was made to prevent a split between coalition members Labor and Likud. He said the decision was based on security information and was the appropriate one for the situation. He added that it gives a tremendous opportunity to the PA [to prove itself].

Cabinet Spokesperson MK Dalia Itzik met with Abbas earlier Wednesday.

Just before the meeting, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said, "If the Palestinians take significant steps to fight terror, we can cooperate." He made the comments during a meeting with Luxembourg's foreign minister, Jean Asselborn.

Sharon convened a special meeting of the Cabinet to discuss the Gaza situation.
